I live in fire ant central. You can't go more then 20 feet without finding these pain in a** critters. I have had luck with just nuking the soil with Imidicloprid. Probably not relevant but worth mentioning: steel is an awful conductor of electricity, about a tenth as good as copper. Stainless steel is about 50 times worse than copper.
