Iann is write. The earthgro here that is sold comes twoways. One is strickly sandy loam which is what I use. The other is high in peat.

Here's mine. Its already on its fourth split you can say. Its the long spine one. I also have the short spine which is almost the same size but it hasn't split yet. Interesting plant though because of its splits.

You live in southern Cal so why not grow them outdoors? You mention Fero's as well, grow them outdoors year round.

Hmm.....the new growth above the lighter color seems the regular dark green. Could it possibly be lightly variegated?

No way to know for sure but that looks like a habitat plant to me. At the very least, it was grown outside for a long time.
