Noticed these black areas on the O. humifusa. Doesn't look good, Rot? Slice those areas off?

Thanks a ton. The new growth does look like what I have. Will make sure to protect it as my basement may approach freezing at times in winter.

Tony, whats that columnar type cactus there in the back of the largest clay pot at the top center of the picture? there's 3 of them. They look very similar to a small cactus I've got.

Thanks for the advice guys! I'll forever treat slugs with a cold heart.

I've got 9 fresh pad growths on the Opuntia and I'm hoping to keep them intact for next year. Plus I got to figure out how my friends cactus doesn't get slug damage. I know he probably does nothing as far as prevention goes.

2 -Is that not the same as 1? Lighting is not the best -do I see blue on the stem? Could be Pilosocereus (should have hairy areoles) or Cleistocactus. #1 has white spines, #2 has yellow. Stems are green on both. Areoles are hairy on both, morso on #2. #2 is thicker despite being half the height of ...

3: Mammillaria rhodantha

5: Echinopsis mamillosa

After another rainfall last evening I was only able to find about 50 slugs this morning. Big improvement over 600+. I'm getting a real knack for it, just one flick of the wrist and the slug is cut in half with lethal accuracy :thumbright:

Harald, I'll be trying egg shells today as a starter.

Daiv, thanks for the advice I'm definitely going to start a vigorous defence now. I had no idea that slugs were the problem cause I rarely saw them on the cactus. Guess they eat at night while you sleep. I was going to design a new cactus bed anyway and will try to make it "slug proof". Ge...

I guess I got a real slug problem. We had a soaking rain for the first time in a few weeks last night so I figured any slugs would be out. Got up early expecting to find some but instead found an army. I started plucking them one by one into a bucket til I ended up with this sluggies-1.jpg This was ...

Hi Bill, Yes, I've seen your pictures before while browsing the forum. That is a mad Opuntia display. If I had just 1/20th of that I'd be more than happy. Actually just one flower would be a major breakthrough :( Since I don't have a sloped area to work with I'll try to design an elevated area compl...

Thanks for the reply. I should clarify that these cactus are in the ground and not a pot.

I did find a few slugs on them this year, Haven't seen one since I sprayed. Your right though all the damage is on new pads only.

Edit: Slugs not snails on my cactus
