Re: A new Avonia

Neat plant! To me it looks more like A. buderiana but with A. quinaria type flowers.

Re: Titanopsis hugo-schlechteri

Add me to the list of people that have found it to be a bit of a pain to grow. I sell them all the time, but usually loose a couple in every batch I get. I understand the attraction to them though, they have some of the most unique coloration of any succulent. Where do you live? It is a winter growe...

Re: What or the most wanted or fashionable cactus?

So does Lophophora williamsii. Are these legal to ship (other than to CA)? I would love to get my hands on one for collection purposes and potentially further study if it grows well. Never seen them for sale, though. L. williamsii is illegal throughout the US because Federal Law prohibits it....

Re: IT'S A GIRL!!!

As I said above, I've had as many batches be mostly female as mostly male, so it doesn't make sense to assume that male to female is the primary pattern. Also, Dichogamy is usually applied to plants that consistently have separate timing of male and female phases, but in the context of a single flow...

Re: Need help with my Haworthia

Haworthias are winter growers that do best outdoors year round in California. So I'd highly recommend keeping it outside next winter. It might be too much sun. The center leaves of the plant look fine so I'm not worried. Going from indoors to any sun at all can cause burn. It has to be acclimated sl...

Re: Major echiveria emergency

Too much water can lead to root rot, which is followed by the top half of the plant drying out because there is nothing to transport the water to it no matter how wet the soil. Take it out of the pot and check the roots, in particular the base of the stem. If all looks good then it may well be under...

Re: Sheet. What have I done? N Turecekianus, sunburn?

I had an incident a couple years ago where I got in a bunch of plants wholesale and put them in temporary quarantine along side my garage where it only gets 1-2 hours of direct sun. Literally one day of that and I fried half the Lithops I got as well as a bunch of Eriosyce occulta and Copiapoa hypog...

Re: rebutia albipilosa--normal growth or etiolated?

It looks like you are growing it in the same place as that Anacampseros. I think that location is going to be too dark for virtually any succulent, possibly even Haworthias and Gasterias.

Re: What or the most wanted or fashionable cactus?

Asking everyone's favorite is probably better as you suggest. I've never considered one more "fashionable" than the other. Most wanted usually refers to really rare ones that collectors want but are in limited supply. They are likely things you haven't heard of if you are new to this. Anyw...

Guess I missed this the first time around. Anyway, do you know about Mesa Gardens? They are the biggest succulent seed sellers in the US. They have lots of Astrophytum and tons of other cacti and succulents.

Re: Can't find info, need to know how to care for this!

It looks like you have it in a regular plastic pot within a ceramic pot. Are there holes in the bottom of the ceramic pot? If not you need to make sure you pour out the excess water every time you water the plant, otherwise the soil will stay soggy and rot. Better yet, just ditch the ceramic pot (as...

Re: what's wrong with my anacampseros rufescens "sunrise"?

The biggest problem is it doesn't have nearly enough light. To be that stretched just since March suggests it is in nearly dark conditions.

I agree that it looks like some Echinopsis. Are you growing it in sand?
