Andy you are probably right. I was even going to suggest maybe ellisiana just now.
I must admit I've probably been wrong about the identity of these plants. I'll get a picture and see what is thought soon..
I think you're right about O. humifusa.
Sorry to be a newb.

For probably about ten years I've seen planted patches of Opuntia in peoples yards, in front of some restaurants and occasionally wild seeming patches by the shore or in a park. And they shrivel up and turn purple here in the snow and cold and icy months, but most of what I've encountered seems to s...

If the seed is large, then soaking will probably speed up the process. I've been sowing cactus seeds in moist soil, sealing them in a plastic baggie tent and setting them out in some sort of warming sun for several hours at least until the soil is warm. I've been sprouting some cactus seeds these pa...

Everything I grow right now is in containers, and it moves indoors/outdoors as seemingly needed. I try to keep outside anything that can handle our environment. The only succulent that seems to grow in my garden is portulaca oleracea. I have some blueberries, veggies (tomato, lettuce,) gladioli, gal...

I can't answer your question as pertains to cacti, but for other types of plants, many of the plants which I've grown from seed have had their cotyledon leaves shrivel and fall at some point after the true leaves had developed. I imagine if there is growth above the seed leaves which appears healthy...

When to fertilize?

So I've been wondering At what point in a cactus's life do you begin to fertilize it? I'm guessing some people fertilize from the beginning with amendments like bone meal, blood meal or time release fert i.e. osmocote. Are fertilizers like that useful to have in a seedling's and seed sprout's soil m...

To me, corking has become a relief because it seems to be benign, with an exception maybe to the aesthetic aspect in some instances.

Is the cactus really only about 2 feet tall?
The photo makes it appear to me to be over two feet.
To my senses it appears to be a strong and healthy individual.

Bad news for NJ cactus & succulent people: the NJ chapter of CSSA is inactive/disbanded. I've been recommended to check out the Philly area CSSA or if I was more north Jersey, to hit up the Connecticut CSSA. I think I'll check out the Philly CSSA next year since I suspect that there are few or n...

Well my only two cents is that growing conditions can affect growth.

i.e. intense light might stimulate larger or more plentiful spines in some plants

Looks hylocereus to my blind eyes.
I hope it produces delicious fruit.

The pink color of the bloom is interesting.

Hylocereus undatus seems to have white-yellow flowers but I don't know how much they vary.

Could be an Epiphyllum
