Re: prob with Yucca gloriosa

yeah Saxicola makes a good point, I would just let it do it's thing. Like I said the Yucca elata here does this sometimes. Esp very old ones that are tall, but they have a tendency to do this

Re: US VIrgin Islands

Dunno, my C. falata is very spiny. And yeah I can't grow it outside. The Opuntiad in the picture looks like a Nopalea (which are lumped with Opuntia now)

Re: Heat in AZ/Cali deserts

PeterB, I will start to reduce watering, despite the arid conditions of late the over night temps were still in the 70s most of the time, but now they are in the 80s and up, so I think that I will reduce watering. and yeah.. the weather up here is going to be a few degrees cooler but for the first t...

Re: Lophophora...legalities question

hahaha I have never said that alchohol was not addictive, but at the same time I largely do not see anything wrong with enjoy alcohol safely.. by doing this you limit intake AND don't EVER EVER EVER drive .. while under the influence .. The problem with that Dave, is that many people already know ab...

Re: The Aerated Cactus?

to be honest, I don't know but.. I live in Central AZ. While many people think of Arizona as not humid, our summers can get very humid, when warm moist air comes off the Gulf of Mexico during our monsoon season. I have never done that, and my cacti are all fine. Of course your humidity is more extre...

Heat in AZ/Cali deserts

Hi all, this weekend is supposed to be very hot in Eastern California, and Central Arizona. I have heard that Death Valley might break it's record heat this weekend. I dont know if that will happen or not, but it will be very warm, even where I live. We have highs in the 110s.. with 115, 114 and 113...

Re: Lophophora...legalities question

Kada btw I think you are largely correct on what it boils down to. I own many plants. Some contain mescaline (however at .0001 % I think for one and less then that for another that really isn't a huge concern anyways, but I was poking fun at the idea that if it has THIS in it it must be bad! BTW us ...

If I want a rush, I have a race car; if I want to be mellow, there's single malt scotch. I lived thru the 60's & whatever level of peyote we had in our circle just gave you the shits for 3 days. No thanks. Sue hahaha well must have been something wrong with it, but then again I wasnt in the 60s...

Re: Lophophora...legalities question

I drink, but I don't have firearms, unlike the rest of the stupid Americans, and I also don't drunk and drive.. just saying Dave.. at the same time, I keep a low profile on what I grow illegally, but I have a plant that is illegal, and I have many more that could be misused. As an aside if we look c...

Re: Pronuciation: ch hard or soft

hahaha Latinized names in German and others are kinda funny.. there are a number of examples.. I pronounce Echino.. like E-Chino, probably wrong, but it's from Greek into Latin lol BUt then again, the part of it being from Greek for the letter K leads to issues. I also likely mispronounce Opuntia, a...

Re: O. ficus-indica

once again, HUMANS and cattle both can eat O. ficus-indica and MANY other varieties, including their pads. The spines, and glochids of course are either burned off or manually pulled off. Mexicans eat O. ficus-indica and other varieties of cactus pads.. As for the fruits, I have made jam out of the ...

Re: Big box hardware store

yeah, plants in pots don't handle cold nearly as well as plants in the ground. The soil in the pot can freeze before the ground ever would, for instance. It's one of the reasons I have to bring my plants inside. Another reason is the winter rains..
