Opuntia as fodder- a worldwide study

This a great web site: http://www.fao.org/DOCREP/005/Y2808E/y2 ... m#Contents
It has sections on using the prickly pear as forage in Brazil, Mexico, the US, etc. As you can tell by the table of contents, it's a comprehensive view of the subject that covers quite a bit of territory.

winter hardy opuntia seeds

I just scraped all the seeds from my winter hardy opuntia pods. They had been on my unheated porch all winter. I planted some of my homegrown seeds last year outside without much particular care and some came up. Some of the seeds from last year are coming up now also. Now I'm wondering if I would g...

The green growth looks salvageable. Follow Hegar's advice using kitchen tongs and a sharp knife. After a while you can try lifting gently to see if they have rooted.

I have a few of the variegated varieties, I'm not sure of the names, some Y. Gloriosa that haven't grown trunks yet, and plenty of Y. Filamentosa. I want to get more with the trunks that are winter hardy, but they don't sell them in the nurseries around here; I'll have to send away for them. I think...

I have to laugh because just the other day a younger guy who was selling me the internet bundle on the porch started "petting" the bunny ears. I had to tell him that that wasn't a good idea. When I first heard about winter hardy cactus, I had made a delivery to a place in Massachuse...

My turn to be jealous, agaves growing wild. 300 dollars? Some here go for 1500 dollars! They move them with a forklift. I also saw a rare one in a 4" pot go for $140! Funny, I saw a web site where a guy in Denmark was all excited about yucca filamentosa ; he couldn't get any. Here, peop...

Lewis_cacti said im particularly envious about your ariocarpus range. i dont have even one, mainly becasue they are extremely rare and extremely expensive here. I first read about Ariocarpus fissuratus years ago & the book said that they were so hard to grow, you had to plant them in two pots a...

Bill said: Some good pointers have been mentioned and yes leaves are a pain to remove from a patch of prickly's. Have you tried a leaf blower as LaurenceJ is thinking of? (Didn't even occur to me, don't have one anyway) I'd like to mention that I have a couple of O.Microdasys , "bunny ears"...

What is the name of the botanical garden? I'd like to take a drive out sometime. Another thing about the prickly pears- My Mom & Dad were in Arizona & my Ma picked up a pad that had fallen on the ground, so they planted it when they got home to Virginia; it grew to a plant about 3x3! When I ...

There's a few things I'd like to point out since I have some prickly pears growing outside In N.E. I started planting mine all densely together and almost too late I realized I would have to weed these things so had to make them accessible one way or another.Weeding cacti reminds me of what herding ...

By all means save the top! Cut a good distance above the rot, handle it gently and let the cut heal. It should root in sand, and would make a handsome looking plant. More will sprout from the bottom. (The ones I have like that I refer to as my "stock"). The operative word here is "sho...

All the ones I have that fit on a windowsill get the window treatment, otherwise they go in the cellar with grow lights (1 gro-light & one standard to get the full spectrum). The days are shorter anyway. And unless you bought it bare root, I would repot it (in the spring) as I do with all new pl...
