Re: Lithops
One of my old Lithops flowering don't know what species? I have a yellow flowering Lithop also but it flowers later. Probably done watering for the rest of the year. I water them just like my cactus. I don't like to disagree with Iann's ID as he has been growing Lithops for far longer than I have, ...

Yes, I keep forgetting it is getting (even) hotter where you are.

Re: makeshift shelter for conophytums and rare mesembs (pics
Thanks for all the input Iann! I've greatly benefited from your experience and feedback! Interestingly, I haven't watered the conophytums since reading your post, and the new growth is as turgid as can be, suggesting it's receiving sufficient water from the outer skin. The soil has been bone dry an...

Re: So I decided to sow
Some mesembs grow fast! The Cheiridopsis look good. Delosperma echinatum is rampant when it is warm and moist. Once the true leaves are established on a mesemb you should plan on moving towards adult growing conditions.

Re: Mould on ferocacti?
Difficultu to control. The areoles produce nectar and then it goes mouldy. The only real solution is to remove the nectar before it can go mouldy. A sufficient number of ants can do this, or a sufficient amount of rain. In very hot dry conditions it can dry out before there are problems, but in the ...

Re: makeshift shelter for conophytums and rare mesembs (pics
There are some Conophytums that I'm sure will will dry themselves out thoroughly no matter how much water they get, although I haven't forced the issue to test. Others I struggle with here, no doubt not hot enough or sunny enough in summer. This one - C. ectypum? the photo isn't labelled - dries to ...

Re: Sulcorebutia buds
I wouldn't worry about the buds in spring, they don't show up until after I start watering. Once the days warm up (inside the greenhouse, not out) so they won't stay cold and damp. Probably April most years. They're dedicated summer growers, so no harm in leaving them dry until you're really sure. T...

No whiskers. You're going to have to get it on its own roots.

Re: Ortegocactus macdougallii help
They look about right. Just a hint of colour. Once they have a few more tubercles, they will take more light and then start to turn the characteristic bluish shade. Might have to wait for spring, they grow quite slowly.

Re: Sowing Thoughts/Advice?
Extra warmth is needed in winter, probably even in Texas. 80F-90F is a good day temperature for germination, but cooler at night especially for mountain species. You can get it with a propagator and a little sun, or with lights and a little insulation. You don't need anything fancy because baby cact...

Re: First time germination
Similar to Gazenia, but bigger brighter flowers. Strictly annual, they grow like crazy for a few months when it is cool and wet, then flower like crazy for a few months when it gets warmer and drier, then die. They're mostly hybrids and you can buy them in slightly different palettes: more pastel, m...

Re: Faucaria tigrina seedlings with small pits/dimples?
You can get marks like that from microscopic damage that then expands. Something like a mite or even a tiny fungal lesion. I haven't seen it on Faucaria seedlings before. Snail bits leave a distinctive rasping pattern which you can see with a magnifier, or by eye once you know what to look for. Thes...

Probably the plants just haven't realised winter is coming yet. Keep them dry and they'll get the message.

Ferocactus, of course Well that's one more Ferocactus flower than I've ever had. I'm going to try even harder now.
