Re: Breakfast Surprise

Thanks for the good wishes. Replacing the landscaping is going to have to wait until spring, unfortunately. Our area was among those hit hard by Superstorm Sandy (we took only minor damage, thankfully). The local nurseries are down to the dregs from people spending the summer re-doing their saltwate...

Breakfast Surprise

So there I was, quietly finishing my breakfast (the Most Important Meal of the Day, right?), when I heard a loud, high pitched engine noise followed by a louder thud. I went to the front door to see what could be seen and was met by: DSCN1808a.JPG The we thought it might be a good idea to get some o...

Getting prettier

Sometimes when you see something everyday, you really don't see it - if you know what I mean. I've lately noticed how pretty this euphorb hybrid has gotten. (It's from Miles' "White Ball Project".) So, I thought I'd share... Showing off the base-of-segment chevrons: DSCN1651a.JPG And the g...

Re: Obsessed with tropical plants

You might want to check out Cycads. They're palm-like and some species grow in dry environments. There are folks right on this forum that are growing them and can probably steer you in the right direction. Just use the 'search' function.

Re: Obsessed with tropical plants

You can certainly try a saucer or humidity tray filled with water but I wouldn't expect too much. Although humidity trays are still standard advice in the world of orchids, I read an article years ago in one of the orchid journals that actually measured the humidity difference created. If I remember...

Re: help, can't post photos

The pics on this site tend to be under 100 k b, with a max of around 600 pixels on one of the sides. I think your pic has to be a lot smaller. I don't know what you used to downsize, but a lot of us use (free) programs like Irfanview (http://www.irfanview.com/" onclick="window.open(this.hr...

As far as "some other household item", you might want to try cinnamon.

Re: Hello everyone!

Hi James, welcome! Another bit of advice: Take a good long look at the "small cacti in flower" at the garden center. Real cactus flowers are rather short lived. If individual flowers are lasting for more than a few days, they're probably glue-on straw flowers - which are difficult to remov...
