Perlite
I use about 25% Pearlite in much of my mixture. Pearlite and Vermiculite are great for making the soil airy which most cacti roots love. I have a small patch of a garden outside and I used a lot of pearlite in my mixture that went right in the ground. My new mix was a huge benefit over the original ...

I sent an e-mail to the guys who are working on the lexicon and here is the reply: Daiv, We have nearly got all the images we are likely to get now so production will soon be underway. In reality we expect the book to be available next May Thanks for your inte...

New Cactus Lexicon
Has anyone heard an update on the release of The New Cactus Lexicon ? There was a preliminary announcement in the Sept/Oct 2003 To the Point newsletter. It was supposed to be ready mid to late 2004. I didn't expect it to be out early, but its got to be close. I really can't wait for it. Here is what...

ID
I'd be happy to try and identify those for you if you want to e-mail me the pics. daiv@cactiguide.com
I have less than half of the Rhipsalis species pictured on-line. If you have good images, I'd like to use them on the site. If you have pictures in habitat I will really get excited.

According to Anderson's book The Cactus Family A. tetragonus and A. pentagonus are two different names for the same plant.

I've got some Opuntias!
I have a few opuntias that I have to keep hacking back. O. littoralis is a native here for sure. Are you interested in Chollas too? Also I've got O. microdaysis of all sorts comming out my ears! Anyone is welcome to have some pads from them.

Stenocactus
I think the first one looks like S. ochoterenanus
The second looks like S. obvallatus
And the third looks like S. multicostatus
Someone else may want to verify that, however.

E oxypetalum animation is on-line!
Ok, here is my second attempt at time lapse photography. I made a point to take more frames this time. I am very pleased with how it turned out. I had to shrink it to 400pixels because of the size, but I didn't want to reduce quality any further. Worth waiting for, I think. Here is the link, enjoy! ...

Mailing Seed
Here is a message from the president of our local Cactus club. This guy has quite a bit of knowledge on this subject. Here is the message: Hi, Seed import is a bit touchy, especially if they are cites I or II species. I have mailed and received a lot of seed around the world. The key seems to be sma...

Makeshift tripod
I actually don't own a tripod either. I used a step ladder propped up on bricks and shoes to get the right height and angle. I drew an outline around the camera with a marker just in case I bumped it. I only wish I had taken more frames. My Epiphyllum oxypetalum bloomed for the first time last night...

Time Lapse Photography
This is my latest addition to CactiGuide.com. I actually got the idea from Joe of ecology.org to make a moving gif out of images of an opening flower. My first attempt is visable at http://www.cactiguide.com/cactus/?genus=Epiphyllum&species=anguliger For those of you on dial up connections, you ...
