After some considerable warmth for a bit we are back to more normal temps (was down to at least 24F one night this week). Doesn't seem to bother these though, they were the first to fatten up and the first to show some signs of growth if one looks close enough, just this week.

They look like flower buds to meHarriet wrote:I sure hope some of those buds are flowers! If they are all new pads, that plant will soon take over my yard.

Couple more pics, The Cylindropuntia's I have always seem to struggle a bit, but still surviving. C. imbricata seems to be most sensitive 000_0178.jpg C. kleiniae isn't quite so bad 000_0179.jpg Also have a C.whipplei that has one section that will be falling off. This one is really fattening up and...

Looks like the fix was pretty easy and looks good. Sounds like you were pretty lucky (as I was) in not having more damage in the cactus garden from that storm (although the rest of the yard was a wreck)

Knew it looked familar, I believe I lost mine also over the winter, just haven't yanked it yet. Couple others are really questionable at this point also.

Have continued warmth in the forcast at least for this week, lots of sun also. Top dressed the garden with some compost yesterday and we will see what begins to awaken from winter. ( I suspect I have some losses, but we will see what happens)

Looking good Andy. I noticed my E. missouriensis is taking on water now. I am not putting the shovel away quite yet either (but wouldn't mind if it just collects dust)

Re: RayC's Connecticut outdoors 2012
Starting to get warmth here, I think a couple of the flat padded ones are beginning to curl up towards the sky. These pics are from Sunday but the last 3 days have been warm (70+ on Monday) and a couple more weeks and the sun angle will be gigh enough to give them a couple more hours of strong light...

Re: My little cacti garden
Very nice. I have a few Cylindropuntia in my garden here in Ct but they don't appear to be nearly as happy with conditions as yours do.

So what do you all prefer? Stable moderate temperatures or ups and downs? We've had stable moderate temps here for all but a few days this winter. It seems like we're one of the few places in the world that is not experiencing some sort of extreme fluctuation. If we can make it through Feb. we've g...
