Hey Sue, what size is yours i got one that looks simular to yours if the spines get wet they turn blood red, mine is good size had it for several yrs now slooooooooooooooow grower but no cephalium. I will snap some pics of it today to show you the size it is next to my hand.

i do not think pushing the growth limit of cacti is such a great idea. They are built to grow at their own pace and excess fertilization can result in splitting and possibly sick plants. You can dunk it in water every now and then but it shouldn't be necessary to do it every week. It shouldn't even be necessary to water it every week. Every spring i always do alot of cuttings, pup pulls and such i always let my cuttings dry for 2 weeks befour potting up in dry soil mix, the pups you dont need to cut off most the time they will just pop off or you can twist them off they get potted up in dry soil mix i dont water anything for awhi...
