Re: Uebelmannia Pectinifera II

Whether you keep the plant or not, the seller should not have sent something that looks like that, even if the Uebelmannia looks OK. Anyway, i'd suggest cutting the stock as close to the base of the Uebelmannia as possible. I might even suggest re-grafting it to ensure it gets healthy and strong bef...

Re: Opuntia

O. basilaris x santa-rita? (not that baby rita form...)

The flowers look like they were pink, but Opuntia flowers can fade, but the pad structure looks similar to the hybrid.

Nice ones!

Hrmmm, Harissia simpsonii looks awfully close to Nyctocereus (Peniocereus) serpentinus. I don't think they were ever synonyms...?

This wood has not been treated yet, but we will treat it with Thompsons Water Seal. It's what we used on the other houses and it works really well. Goes on like paint.

Re: Central Arizona cactus trip

Great photos, Rich!

Fero. pilosus

That's not O. basilaris with a green stigma. O. aurea or a hybrid with aurea is my guess.

Yup, Astro. ornatum

Most are E. englemannii, some are fasiculatus, but i'll let the more seasoned experts point out which is which :P

Re: Encouraging Gymnocalycium to pup

Yes, drilling the meristem will cause it to pup, a hot knitting needle or large pin will do the same without as much visible damage to the plant. This should work for virtually any cactus. Otherwise, sit back and wait :D You'll have some wait time anyway, even with the drilling/hot pin trick. A lot ...

It's difficult to say as they appear to need more light, but just maybe Monadenium heteropodum?

Re: Opuntia ID

Looks like it could be Fragilis. Are all the spines round like an ice-pick? Are any flat like a sword? (ie. Grusonia have flat spines)

Re: What's the skinny on "spine mealies?"

if I see spine mealies on a plant, should I inspect the root system? And even if I don't see any root mealies, should I still rush for the systemics, as a prophylactic? Personally, if i see spine mealies and the plant looks otherwise healthy, i simply treat what i can see. Of course if the plants h...

Re: What's the skinny on "spine mealies?"

Spine mealies don't necessairly mean root mealy. I think they are quite different. It's nice that the spine mealies hang out in plain sight to see, but those are just the front line expendables. The real bad dudes are hiding laying eggs  Dead mealies aren't anything but dust :D A plant with ro...
