Re: www.succulentguide.com Down?

This is very frustrating! CactiGuide.com is hosted on Cactus-mall and SucculentGuide.com is on another hosting account. They moved SucculentGuide.com to a new server. SucculentGuide.com shares some info with the Cactiguide.com database and that connection is being blocked causing the whole site to g...

Re: New Kind of Spam

No, it is only registration going forward. There may be a few that already registered, but haven't posted their spam yet, but we'll knock those out pretty fast I think.

Re: New Kind of Spam

Enough is enough eh? Well I set the board to require admin approval on new users. We held out as long as we could, but I think it is getting to the point where the cons outweighed the pros. We'll see how it goes!

Re: Good book on epiphytes?

Yes, there seems to be a very small sampling of people that like growing the epiphytic species. I went to an Epi Society meeting in San Diego once. Nice people, but the whole thing was about the hybrids. I understand the appeal of the hybrids, but personally don't have much interest. So I guess it d...

Re: Small Cactus Help Needed

Dan,
Ahh - I didn't think about it from that perspective. Yes, it isn't exactly a "wild" plant!

Re: Good book on epiphytes?

Man those are hard to come by. The books by Supplie are pretty much just pictures of hybrid flowers - not much there. I recommend this one for Schlums: http://www.exoticplantbooks.com/detail/?product_id=63" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; There is also a book called "Cac...

Re: Small Cactus Help Needed

Great advice given above. I just wanted to add that none of those species above are Arizona natives. Most are from Mexico - the orange one is from South America.

Re: A little rain

Interesting. I would expect that after a long winter dormancy, but not in mid summer. Something tells me I would quickly kill this species if I grew it. You completely hold out water on hot days?

Hard to say for sure without seeing it, but even different growing conditions (stronger light for example) could change the appearance dramatically from one plant to the next.

Re: F. castanea at it again

It really is a great species. Congrats on getting it to grow. To me these things are a lot like Copiapoa - the flowers are pretty much all the same in the genus. They are nice to have, but definitely grown more for the stems!

Re: Gymnos flowering (sort of)

You might be able to "fake it" by placing a glass jar over the plant. Just be careful not to cook it!

But not sure how soon that can be done.
