Re: Blossfeldia on paper towels
I suspect the paper towel will rot away in far less than 2 years if kept continuously moist. I grow these in an inorganic substrate, and the paper towel is a 100% organic substrate, so I doubt the seedlings would like it compared to grit with enough loam to fill the cracks so the seed doesn't wash t...

Re: Sterilization techniques
Yep. I add a few ccs per quart spray bottle. H2o2 breaks down when exposed to light, so it doesn't store in a translucent bottle.

Re: Sterilization techniques
I microwave moist soil, then spray with a mild h2o2 solution after sowing the seeds. My bags lose moisture after a few months. The ideal moisture level in a bag will result in the surface drying when the lights are on, then moisture wicking back up to the seedlings at the surface at night. Seedlings...

Re: Problems with Avonia Quinaria
That's why it's good to use an inorganic mix, organics grow mold and other nasty stuff. Even if you don't sterilize an inorganic mix, it will not grow nasty stuff like that.

IME, they either germinate and grow easilly, or don't germinate at all. I grow them in a mostly inorganic mix.

It may get a hormonal boost from the stock before the union fails too. The rootstock can dramatically affect how the scion grows.

Re: Massonia pustulata (seeds?) . . .
I sowed some early this winter and it took 4-6 weeks for them to come up. I thought they were duds, but it looks like they came close to 100%.

Re: i could literally KILL her...
Little kids will pull up full grown lithops to look at them. They're too interesting not to touch, unfortunately, and unsafe around anyone without restraint.
Mice and rats also eat them, hence lots of mouse/rat poison in the GH.

Re: my collection so far....
I'm not sure about pulchellus, but your inermis look identical to mine. We got 5 inches of rain in Dec, and the nightly lows were just above freezing. They see a few degrees of frost with damp soil. I have other NOID triglochidiatus looking plants that are also surviving those conditions. Other echi...

Re: Growing aloe polyphylla from seed.
I got 10 packs of seed from mesagarden twice (2007 and 2008), and each time got one plant out of it. They're both about soccer ball size now. Here you can get one in a 1g pot for about $20 at a cactus show/sale. I put mine in large pots with 100% turface, so probably spent that much just for their m...

Re: my collection so far....
I leave Echinocereus triglochidiatus inermis out in the rain and frost all winter here and I've never lost one. That also sped up their growth considerably. They don't grow in the winter, but as soon as they feel like waking up there is water available and they plump up.

Re: Dudleya growing season
Different populations of dudleya vary considerably in how much white powder they have. On one hillside or cove they may be bright green, but 10 miles away they may all be powdery. Those traits are saved when they're placed together, so I think it's genetic variation more than environmental - though ...

Re: strombocactus seidelii ?
I have a pot of seedlings about 3 or 4 years old and about 1cm at the largest in diameter. They grow about as fast as regular strombocactus. They are a brighter shade of green from all my other strombo seedlings, and are much larger than v. jarmilae of the same age.

Re: Welwitschia mirabilis
I got 5 welwitchia seed from mesagarden 2 years ago and now have 5 happy plants. I sowed them individually in 4"x4"x 12-18" deep citrus nursery pots (they came with citrus trees in them so I don't know where to get more), in pure turface. I moistened the media and sterilized it in the...
