Quite a menagerie you've got there Ptown :D Great pics! Almost like a petting zoo, though I've heard that Javelinas aren't exactly friendly if you get too close. But I've also heard they are tasty when cooked right. I've always been amazed they can eat a plant that I give grudging respect to. Ouch! ...

So you make your own pots? Neat idea, I've always wanted to try pottery making.

How to blow a wonderful opportunity

I posted my cactus Picture Contest entry today and it made me think about an incident from a couple weeks ago. As many of you know I've been building a website about my Cacti and Succulent gardening and collection. It was inevitable that people would find it though I haven't officially submitted it ...

My entry

Well I'm way out of my league here. Fantastic pics all :D I don't do well with the Epiphytes. I think it's maybe way too hot and dry here. But I keep on trying. Here's a Disocactus flagelliformis putting out a few flowers in it's death throes last spring. Franj http://tucson-gardener.com/graphics/ca...

Thanks CP,

I thought of M. humboldtii too, the spination is very similar but this plant is way too small. I'll have to investigate M herrerae. Is it difficult on its own roots? Wondering why this one was grafted.

Yet another Mam

Found this among the flourescent red and yellow grafts at a Home Depot. A dainty little plant, the main head is barely 3/4" across.

I agree with Phil on the ID and the method of saving your Grandmothers plant.

Hi Plantcelot :D I tend to notice the odd ones. The EF Anderson desciption you posted suggests green or greenish brown. Most of my Gymnos are just that. I actually have one that looks like it's made of chocolate. http://tucson-gardener.com/graphics/cactacea/Gymnocalycium%20hossei.html And that may b...

That's the problem with Lobivias, now that they've been lumped in with Echinopsis how do you identify them? I have one with a nearly identical flower. Labled just "Lobivia hybrid". Hmm, tells me a whole lot, right? Echinopsis, Schnecinopsis, I don't give a hoot! Give the plant a name!

Dgrower,

You need to tell us something more about how you are growing this plant. Inside? Outside? How much light? How often do you water it?

It looks like the onset of rot to me.

Hey, come on Buck! Take heart. Not a problem with these plants. Pot it back up in a new pot and give it a little water. Most of those buds will still pop.
All is not lost unless it gets shredded by a tornado. Still looks pretty healthy to me.

A very interesting Opuntoid. I would bet I could grow it out here in Arizona.

:D Glad to see you're softening toward the "other" cacti Bill :D Mammillaria is one of my favorite genera. Some are a little rot prone but easy to grow if you shelter them from extremes. I think the main reason I built a greenhouse was for my Mamms. A lot of them bloom in winter. Some all ...
