Re: Can you grow a Ferocactus from cuttings?

I had a mature Fero that lost all its roots from a gopher. I moved the cactus, took care of the gopher and the Fero is alive to this date. That was about 3 years ago. I have not tried to cut a larger Fero and root from a fresh cut. :-k Most Fero's don't pup unless the growth point gets frozen.

Re: What are you all reading?

When I was teaching English 7th graders, I would read books for young readers. Will Hobbs, Gary Paulsen, Karen Cushman, Sharon Creech and many more were on the list of authors I read during those years. Now it's Algebra and reading less. But I do enjoy Historical Fiction and Bernard Cornwell seems t...

Easy Gardener 6-ft W Saddle Tan Shade Fabric from Lowes, Maximum Percent Shade Protection is 75, I think it is less, works for me, but the Fresno sun is killer, your area may need less.

Re: root mealybugs

I use Systemic and spray with alcohol. I sterilize the soil when I start seeds. The soil is moist and I heat the soil up to 160 degrees F in a microwave. Just use an instant read thermometer.

Re: Advice needed: What % shade cloth for Zone 10a? (San Diego)

If you are not looking for custom fit, I bought off the shelf shade cloth at Lowes. Been using it since 2010 and no problems. Problems, not seemed or has eyelets. I have also bought custom size online with seams and eyelets and prefer custom because of the seams and eyelets. I live in Central Valley...

Re: root mealybugs

If possible wash off the roots of all soil and let dry for a few days. You can even clean the plant with alcohol. Keep out of sun. To have sterile soil I believe you microwave to 165 degrees F. Cool off and repot. Keep away from other plants and see what happens. Try adding Bonide Product 951 System...

Re: Looking to rent grow space in San Diego, CA! (greenhouse, shaderoom, etc)

If I lived in San Diego I could rent out that kind of space. Here in California the price of land, houses, and to rent is astronomical. I live no longer in the golden stated, just an expensive state.

Re: Is this dichotomous growth on my Lobivia aurea v leucomalla

My Lobivia was growing normal and then started to look funny at the growth tip. It continue until it was clear that it was cresting. So, I decided to cut off the crested top and root it. I haven't found this year's picture but the crested has doubled in size and the original plant has sent out offse...

Re: Rooting Pachycereus pringlei cutting

I treated the cutting like others. Let dry for a week or more, put it in my regular cactus mix and give some water every two weeks. I rooted the cutting last year and now new growth. Haven't check the roots, firm in the pot though. :D
