Re: Tephrocactus/ Cylindroptunia watering...
Opuntia come from both North and South America. Cylindropuntia are almost all from North America (C. tunicata comes to mind, as it's also found in Chile) but Austrocylindropuntia are all from South America (or Central America) Austro meaning south or southern. Try this scenerio...when your a child y...

Yup, the Huntington is a 'do not miss!' Quail has been renamed San Diego Botanical Gardens. Too many to list in the SD area! Most are wholesale though. You are welcome to stop by our nursery, but might be a bit off your travel path. It's in a bit of disarray...just had our 2nd baby boy born

Nice plant! C. humilis
C. montana could be a possibility, although usually with all black spines.

Re: Astrophytum coahuilense?
A. coahuilense differs from A. myriostigma in fruit, flower and seeds along with having heavier flecking covering the body completely and it has a velvet-like touch. The flower is yellow with a red throat or rarely a pure yellow flower.

You do good work! Foam padding would definitely be nice, maybe in bright florescent orange  Actually, that reminds me.... i can't remember where it was, but i couldn't forget what i saw. Above a short doorway was a large plush toy yellow duck. I had no trouble getting through as i was bent over...

Re: Last of the new arrivals!
I can't imagine that there would be a problem if there's a touch of peat in the Copiapoa. /quote] Steve (and Coronacactus), it was not meant as a point of criticism when I mentioned the peat on the roots of the Copiaopa, (I should have elaborated). I only wanted to point out that it's apparently po...

I would advise against any kind of window tinting film as most film blocks out from 90 to 99% of the suns UV rays.

Re: Last of the new arrivals!
They look great in their new homes, Steve! The Frailea flower either never opened or you may have missed it, that's a seed pod. The Copiapoa may have had a little peat, still being a seedling it may have still been in it's starter mix. Most of the others were in 70/30 or 60/40 potting soil/pumice. H...

Re: Anything good near palm springs?
Just outside of town, right near (and right under) the aerial tramway on route 111 headed towards I10 there are some valleys with lots of plants. Stick to the first few valleys right near the tramway and just past the last set of houses, any further than that and there aren't many plants. There's a ...

For the floor, i like a good quality weed cloth and a 3" thick layer of 3/4" gravel. Concrete with drains would be nice, but very expensive!
For bench height, i used 32" and 28". I'm 6'1" and have no problems. I actually prefer the 28".

Opps, forgot it's split in 2. You are correct, sir! I think it also straddles the Colorado and Mojave Deserts.
