Re: Bad news for the garden center
Great post DaveW. "...the more insecticide you use and the prolonged use of a single insecticide without repeatedly ringing the changes with different insecticides..." "Use pesticides responsibly in doses and frequency they recommend on the label" Here is the mistake I made, usin...

Re: Bad news for the garden center
Unfortunately, I can relate to this all too well... A garden center in my area that has the best selection of cacti has an issue with root mealies. Plants purchased there years ago were the source of a problem that I continue to deal with today. Stick to strong "new plant" protocols and th...

Re: Astrophytum coahuilense?
Hi All - I bought A. coahuilense from Miles years ago. It was smallish when I got it and has been a very slow grower, I have yet to see a flower but the past two or three years we have seen aborted buds. In contrast a small A. myriostigma (one of the quad types) half its size has flowered two of thr...

Re: Masscactus - Flowers and Random (Updated June 2013)
Thanks tudedude! Dunno about contaminated soil but it has come up as a topic before. I mix my own from mostly inorganic materials at this point, I may be dealing with an environmental issue - they are laying dormant somewhere I am not getting and working their way back in. Maybe ants. I am convinced...

Re: Masscactus - Flowers and Random (Updated June 2013)
Hey All, Thanks Fanatic - Not the worst go of it, others have had it worse. Really just a 2 or 3 plants showing a bit of frost exposure. Its interesting where, these plants came through fine previous winters with the same wintering technique. Although not particularly different than any of the past ...

Re: Masscactus - Flowers and Random (Updated June 2013)
Hi All, Glad to see everyone is doing well! Another successful - more or less - wintering here. For some inexplicable reason all my (3) anistisii ssp. damsii died, looks like frost damage. A few other plants took minor frost hits but for the most part all are looking good. No pictures really this ye...

Lithops Interrupted
Hello All, Is there a way to determine where a lithops is in terms of growth/season cycle? I lost track and there was some neglect due to a hectic schedule. For example, I had 4 plants in one pot and at least 2 shed old leaves but I am not sure if the others did. Many have really compacted and becom...

Re: Confused Gymnocalycium
I will speculate that is not G. marsoneri, but simply anistisii ssp. damsii.

Re: Maybe a silly question...
The consensus grows, I think it was probably some sort of insect too at this point. Would earwigs do this? Not surprising they didn't find it tasty, my plants are all fairly toxic.

Re: Maybe a silly question...
Yea I was going to say "Daiv or mods" please move the post. Thanks! :) Snail - slugs, now thats interesting and I hadn't considered. I did see a slug recently just outside the greenhouse but never inside. This plant is on the floor...Bacteria/fungus was my second guess after sunburn. They ...

Re: Maybe a silly question...
Daiv - please move this to "Sick Cacti - Pests, Diseases, etc", I should have started it there. Pictures, last one is blurry but you get the idea. Whats going on here? I don't water overhead and never in sun. I cant figure out the cause. The heads shown are all close together: http://home....

Maybe a silly question...
Hey - I noticed this morning on that large clump of baldianum I have, some very, very light green (in contrast to rest of plant) spots and streaks on a few heads. Some of the spots are a bit recessed. Looks like sunburn spots. My theory - I keep these larger pots on greenhouse floor and as a result ...

Re: Finally! Success
Nice work Fanatic, L. principis is a cool plant. I'll second Daiv's suggestion - Cereusly has a really nice one that he has shown off for years, I'd ask for some tips.
