Re: Cactus smugglers busted
Despite being the law, the Mexican laws regarding cacti are pure unadulterated BS. Its so bad that Mexican cacti collectors complain that they have to import seed from Europe for some of their own native rarer species! There is a vibrant cactus hobbyist community in Mexico that is at odds with their...

Re: Cactus nurseries (sources) in Ecuador?
¿No pueden conseguir permisos para colectar cactáceas de los Galápagos? Wow: its that difficult.

Re: Opuntia genetics for no spines
Interesting talk about glochidless cacti. I don't have any of the nearly glochidless/spineless forms of O. fragilis (thinking the well-known O. debreczyi var. denudata {Potato Cactus}). Its on my want list, however. I do have what is probably the only North American truly glochidless AND spineless O...

Re: Callus before using rooting powder?
Dip in rooting hormone (powder form) right after cutting it. Than put it aside until it calluses before putting in the ground or medium.

Grafting Tephrocactus geometricus?
On various forums (including this one) I've read about using E. pachanoi, E. spachianus, Austrocylindropuntia subulata and O. ficus-indica as stock for grafting T. geometricus. I have several questions for people: Do people have any one favorite that gives the fastest growth? Also, does the growth o...

Is there such thing as a spineless Trichocereus?
Can anyone recommend a spineless Trichocereus? The only one I found online were some forms of T. scopulicola.

Re: Root of Harrisia looks abnormally large
FYI, Harrisia normally has tuberous roots. I've read that in Australia these really is a problem because Harrisia an invasive species. Australian publications that talk about getting rid of cacti, note that you simply can't get rid of Harrisia simply cutting the plant above ground. You have to get t...

what's the smallest opuntioid?
I was reading Michael Kiessling & Josef Pöschl's German/English book entitled "Tephrocactus und andere Feigenkakteen"/"Tephrocactus and other prickly pears" from 2000. On page 207, they make the claim that the smallest opuntioid by “segment” [probably by dimension, i.e., leng...

Peter Walkowiak, President of the Palomar C&SS, gave our local club a presentation over a year ago (Monterey Bay C&SS) on his soil mix. He added wet perlite (60% of total mix) to a mix of 20% compost (or potting soil) and 20% decomposed granite fines/dust. He mixed it all together until you ...

Re: Opuntia echios
I just bought one from Lithops.net (Tucson at Plants for the Southwest) which is located in your town for under $20. Just yeterday, I potted the small cutting so it could root. The one I ordered is O. echoes var. gigantea. Are your cuttings the same? I've read there's also O. echios var. zacana and ...

Re: Pronunciation
This is an interesting question, fanaticactus. I've never heard of anyone taking a course in "Botanical Latin." I learned Classical Latin. I've been only collecting cacti for a couple of years and I pronounce the genus/species names of cacti more like the Germans with some exceptions. Dave...

I concur with iann. My Stenocactus got the same sunburn/corking when I left it out for too long in the sun. I now give then more shade: problem solved.

I happened upon your website by accident while doing a search for Tacinga. I downloaded the entire site as reference in case it ever goes down. I check it every so often. Tu sitio es muy informativo, James.
