Is this gymnocalycium friedrichii?
Plant isn't in bloom so can't see if flowers are pink. Looks very pale not like others I've seen. Ribs can help with Id but I'm not good at telling difference.

Re: Difference between G.mihanovichii and G.friedrichii
Here's a page that has a pretty good explanation: Gymnocalycium friedrichi i Whether considered one species or two, they're closely enough related that I would expect them to cross-pollinate easily. Why on that page does it say they rarely produce offsets, this couldn't be farther from the truth! I...

Re: Difference between G.mihanovichii and G.friedrichii
I think some consider G. friedrichii to be a variety of G. mihanovichii. Why are you wanting to cross them with green ones? Wouldn't crossing the colored forms give you a better likelihood of getting a new color form? Being the colored ones have been bred so long, wouldn't breeding two colored ones...

Difference between G.mihanovichii and G.friedrichii
Both these come grafted and in crazy colors. I have red and also purple grafted. Only the purple bloomed and it has neon pink flowers, which is it? I'm looking on ebay for green form of this and plants I can use in cross pollination, so it's important to know the difference, unless the two species H...

Where do garden centers buy grafted cacti from?
I live in New York and Lowes sells grafted cacti, the round ones in neon colors. The company that ships them to lowes gets them from somewhere but they won't say where?
So where are these grown? Are they from Japan? I wanted to contact the company to get seed from the cacti.

Re: Multiple questions: Id gymnocalycium mihanovichii? hybri
Out of 2 flowers another fell off leaving one, I got annoyed! I read somewhere they sometimes don't fully open, so I gently forced open the last flower and saw everything developed. I used a q tip and gently rubbed pollen from my green cactus onto the middle of the purple cactus flower, and some pol...

Re: Free seeds, Gymno Mihanovichii Friedrickii
Are they the kind that need to be grafted? What color was the seed and pollen parents?

Re: Multiple questions: Id gymnocalycium mihanovichii? hybri
Gymnocalycium mihanovichi body and flower colour do vary even on their own roots according to variety. Some of the grafted mihanovichii's are just done to speed up propagation and could be grown on their own rots since they are not chlorophyll deficient, unlike the bright red or sickly yellow bodie...

Re: Multiple questions: Id gymnocalycium mihanovichii? hybri
Yes, the flower did end up opening fully when I put it directly in the spot sunlight came in through the windowsill, it might of acted like a greenhouse. I'm going to do the same for the purple and see if it helps.

Re: Multiple questions: Id gymnocalycium mihanovichii? hybri
The purple ones are deficient mutants. The buds rarely open. You might try more heat. They aren't really G. mihanovichii although they are often called that. They're also often called G. friedrichii, but that is an invalid name. You probably don't want to know what they should actually be called .....

Multiple questions: Id gymnocalycium mihanovichii? hybridizi
I brought these 3 different colored cacti at a garden center. I was under the assumption they were all gymnocalycium mihanovichii, then I was told they are really gymnocalycium friedrichii, and the green cactus isn't the same as the purple and red. I am VERY confused this is my first time growing ca...
