My money is on Notocactus...
The spines, the areoles, the tubercles, and the newest growth on top all say "noto" to me...
An overfed N. uebelmannianus probably...

Looks like an Agave attenuata, one of the more cold sensitive agaves, wich will not tolerate temps much below freezing.
Very typical agave cold damage...
It is a cliff dweller native to the Mexican states of Jalisco, Nayarit, and Michoacan.

Agave americana is not too picky about soil.
Here in southern Louisiana it grows in flat heavy clay soils with no problems - in our wet conditions it just seems to grow faster and larger.
As long as you do not have standing water on the ground for any length of time, it should do OK...
