Just talked with one of my professors and confirmed the next course at the Huntington will be on the Cactaceae! I'm stoked! Yeah, meristematic tissue in the leaf is capable of turning into roots and new stems/leaves, usually called asexual propagation

I would definitely get them out of that soil ASAP, or when you water them they might rot. I'd suggest mixing what they're in with a lot of perlite

The first thing you should probably do after buying cacti is repot them in a well draining soil mix, as most corporate stores will pot the plants in a regular potting soil that won't drain fast enough. This can lead to the cacti rotting and dying. I would suggest buying some cactus mix soil and addi...
