Hey Tony great job with the transformation. Very inspiring and beautiful plants you have.
I'm in the middle of transforming my hell strip in the front of my apartment.
Any more updates you got? \

Re: Killing Grass Lawn and replacing with succulents
Here's a little update gang, So I have been digging deeper and killing the grass and seeds with round up. It turns out that deeper than 6 inches it is clay... looks like a black sort of clay. I am ammending with sand, pebble rock, pumice, volcanic rock, and other gritty mixtures, as well as throwing...

Re: Killing Grass Lawn and replacing with succulents
I think that you are correct Saxi.... I tried digging deeper and the soil is rock hard. I believe it is clay, but I am not 100% sure.
How can you tell if it's clay? It just feels rock hard like cement

Re: Fertilizing succulents?
Thanks saxicola. I'll be diluting well. Also, no grounds. I have pumice, I can buy it at the feed store for $14 for a 40 lb bag thank you! The summer/winter thing is difficult because there are so many different varieties. I've noticed some of my cuttings are not taking while others are, i'm gessing...

Re: Killing Grass Lawn and replacing with succulents
Thanks guys. Leland so in my aarea is the soil more clay like? I wasn't sure because I put the soil in a jar of water and shook it and it seemed to be about 40% sand 30$ loam and 20% clay/ other material. That's the jar of water test you can google it, but I'm not sure how accurate it is really. I d...

Re: Potulacaria afra just keeps on growing
Hey I was wondering if these things root easily from cuttings during the summer? For some reason 5/5 of my cuttings which were dried for a week and out in a gritty mix all just shriveled and died?
Any tips mate?

Fertilizing succulents?
I was wondering what minerals succulents like the most? I heard they like alkaline with calcium before I believe? I was wondering if fertilizing potted succulents was different from Planted In Ground succulents PIG? Also I've mainly used coffee grounds from Starbucks to amend soil and sometimes to f...

Re: Killing Grass Lawn and replacing with succulents
Hey guys heres a little update. So far I've dug around the strip about 1 foot where I'll put a gravel border so people can walk on and get out of their cars easier. Also I've been spraying with roundup and added Coffee Grounds from starbucks (they give these free from starbucks) and watering every o...

Re: Killing Grass Lawn and replacing with succulents
Thanks Tony there is a Resource Building Materials. Looks like they even have Turface. I was wondering whats the best/ cheapest product for mixing for succulents? Pumice, Turface or Decomposed Granite. Cost is one of the big issues for me. What is a bummer, is I'm pretty sure there are about 20 diff...

Re: Killing Grass Lawn and replacing with succulents
I'm in San Pedro and Long Beach. Do you mind me asking a bit of a newbie question? Whats wrong with sand? Is it not thick or gritty enough? I've been using a combination of the "all purpose washed sand" from home depot : small gravel : cactus mix. Or something similar for my cuttings and p...

Re: Killing Grass Lawn and replacing with succulents
Wow Tony I breezed through every page of your posts and I loved comparing the original pics to how full its grown. How long does the round up take? Where do you recommend getting a large amount of decomposed granite? I tried home depot earlier and they only had paver sand and washed multi-purpose sa...

Re: Killing Grass Lawn and replacing with succulents
Yeah LA city promotes this sort of thing. They have the incentives for it, although for this size I don't qualify. In Los Angeles they give you $2 for every square foot of grass you remove and in Long Beach they give you $3 for every square foot. I suppose I won't put bottles. I do a lot of pot gard...

Killing Grass Lawn and replacing with succulents
Hi I'm in coastal Los Angeles (Sunset Magazine zone 24 or US Hardiness Zone 10b). I wanted to kill the city grass between the sidewalk and road. So its a fairly small space about 7 feet by 26 feet approximately. I was wondering whats the best way to 1. kill the grass and 2. mound the terrain for bet...

Re: Good places to get Cactus
I just made a large order from Sheilam nursery in South Africa, and was pleased. The prices are great as they are in Rands, and even with postage and phyto permits they worked out at about 3 bucks each for rare plants. A good way of getting plants not easily available here in the US. I also bought ...
