Re: Spring Inventory
Tagging on to Charles' note, I live in Carson City, and have found that my regular, cold hardy natives have survived very well, so far, given the 19"+ of rain/snow moisture that we have had since the 1st of December! I have lost some freshly planted, last spring, Gymncalyciums that would be rel...

Re: Cold Hardy Miniature Opuniads!
Jared: I am in Carson City (zone 6a) and have had good luck with Opuntia polyacantha, var. erinacea and var. hystricina, in the ground for 2 years. They can be completely covered in snow and survive just fine. We had a couple of nights last Winter that were down to -9F, and the Opuntias did fine. I ...

Re: Opuntia santa rita
Dean: Thanks for the heads up. As I look at the samples pictured in Cactiguide, Opuntia macrocentra looks a lot closer. The nursery that I purchased this plant from got their stock from a grower in Santa Rosa, so it could be a hybrid.

Opuntia santa rita
DSCF5784.JPG DSCF5782.JPG DSCF5783.JPG I purchased this Opuntia santa rita at a nursery in CA, in Half Moon Bay. Unfortunately, I could not find any data at the time, that would show cold hardiness. This plant is good for about 25 degrees, so I can not plant it in my garden. We had 2 nights with lo...

Re: Cold hardy cacti for zone 5a?
Check out John Weiser's list of cold hardy cactus, that is on the Outdoor Cacti forum list. He is in Reno/Sparks, where we get about 24" of snow per year on the average. Last Winter we had lows that just dipped below zero! He also has a link to his flicker account that has photos of his garden ...

Carson City - Cold Hardy Cacti
]I am a new member to Cactiguide.com and have been a fan of Cacti, Yucca and Agave for many years. The search is always fun, to find plants that will survive in our cold Winter environment. I have good luck with several Cylindropuntia as well as other varieties. I have attached some pictures of what...

Re: A High Desert Garden
John: My name is Rod Dimmitt, and I live in Carson City. I am a fellow cactus affectionado, and I was up to meet Charles Barnum a couple of weeks ago. I would love to come by and see your garden. My front yard is a mix of Cactus, Yucca and Agaves, with the challenge of finding plants that will survi...
