Re: Echinocereus rigidissimus
My rubispinus has had a bit of a sulk since flowering, but seems to have picked up a bit this year, so hopefully it has now re-rooted since being re-potted. E. rigidissimus rubispinus was discovered by Alfred Lau and is an unusual Echinocereus in that it's stigma lobes are not green, which is one of...

Re: newbie question, why there is no trichocereus
"It is quite confusing as most people still use Trichocereus even though the correct name now is Echinopsis." Classification is simply a matter of opinion. As long as a name is validly published according to the "rules" you are allowed to use it. There never has been only one cla...

Re: Camera advice?
Unless it has a continuous autofocus mode the autofocus stops as soon as you partially depress the shutter button on most digital cameras to hold that focus. Not a problem in normal photography, but in macro photography with often depths of field of a few millimeters you can sway out of focus before...

"I believe I met you on another forum." Yes majcka, I am hard to get away from, you may run but you can't hide! LOL I was also once a UK Moderator on an American Nikon camera Forum too, so countries are no barrier keeping me out! I see a few names I think I know here from other Forums too....

50+ years.
Been growing cacti for just over 50 years and also been a member of the Nottingham Branch British Cactus and Succulent Society all that time. Have an 18ft x 12ft and a 10ft x 8ft greenhouse with around 1000 plants in them. Also a member of the Cactus & Succulent Society of America, The Chileans,...

Re: photographing plants - the hob way
"Problem with my monopod is that I cannot move the camera the way I want when I want. Hob's tripod has a gizmo that allows him to position the camera so that it can be aimed up and down as well as left and right --- the only way to move the camera up or down with the monopod is to do a kind of ...

Re: 1. My hardware setup and why
"My poor old Nikon D50 with only 6.1 megapixels pales in comparison!" Depends what you use the camera for Harriet. If for posting images online a computer monitor screen only has the resolution of about a 3-4 Megapixel camera so unless you crop an image radically all that extra resolution ...

Re: Most recent camera: Zenit EM
You will probably find cheap lenses for a Zenit on EBAY. If you want to do close-up's though you may need to get supplementary close-up lenses that fit your filter thread. Again these are on EBAY. Having an above lens rather than TTL light-meter however you may find you need to modify your exposures...

Re: What difference a new camera makes!
Are you using autofocus with your macro lens Harriet? If so switch to manual as autofocus is unreliable close up. There is enough depth of field in conventional photography to cover any imprecision in autofocus, but in macro photography you may only have a centimeter or less depth of field, a few mi...

Re: New black background
Like Rod I use black cotton velvet, which is less shiny than velvets made from synthetic thread. To avoid shine on the backdrop you need to try and keep the light off it, either by shading or often inclining the top of the card forward will help. Another method to obtain a black background is to mat...
