Reliable way to distinguish two epiphytes?

Hello- A friend of mine is growing a "rick rack" cactus and wants to know if it is Cryptocereus anthonyanus or Epiphyllum anguliger. Without flowers (which make it easy!) is there any way to tell with certainty which she has?

Re: Cactus smugglers busted

Collecting legally in Mexico is a very difficult business. The permitting process there was recently changed and the federal government abolished general collecting permits. There are two separate Mexican agencies (Semarnat and Conafur) that one now has to go through to try to get permits. There are...

Re: Cactus smugglers busted

Vipassana, grusonii was almost entirely removed from its natural habitat by a dam building project, so, believe it or not, it is endangered in habitat. It is illegal to bring any cacti out of Mexico. Also, it is illegal to engage in international trade of many cacti that are CITES I and there are re...

Re: High Desert Cactus ID

Hello! I lived in Santa Fe for 25 years and became quite familiar with the cactus flora of the area. New Mexico is a fantastic state overall to travel and see cacti in habitat. You might want to check out the New Mexico cactus and Succulent Society which meets in Albuquerque once a month. Good peopl...

Bahia Magdalena cactus studies

Hello CactiGuide! I used to be very active here but embarked on a graduate program in environmental life sciences with a focus on cactus biology, ecology, conservation and speciation at Arizona State and I've been swamped with work from that endeavor. It's been great but very challenging. I have bee...

Bibliography of recent cactus and succulent research

Hello all- One of the aspects of getting a Ph.D. in plant biology as I'm doing at Arizona State is keeping up with the current literature related to one's study subject. It is truly remarkable how much research and publication is going on in the cactus and succulent area. I was asked by Tim Harvey t...

Re: Sclerocactus

Hi Vlani, these are usually just placed within parviflorus, mostly due to geographical proximity and pretty much identical flowers, as far as people can tell. It may well be that there is something going on warranting further study of the whole parviflorus complex across southern Utah, but you won't...

Re: Removing entire grass lawn, any tips?

It is a fairly standard procedure here in suburban Arizona, it turns out. Everyone has pretty much the same protocol. Estimates have not been too bad to have it done, either. There's a "no Bermuda grass guarantee" from one of the contractors, which is cool. Thanks for the suggestions, Peter

Removing entire grass lawn, any tips?

Hello! My significant other and I bought a house last July here in sunny Chandler Arizona and we want to completely remove the grass front and side lawns and most of the grass in the back yard as well, leaving a small portion of grass for her 6 year old to play on. Has anyone here ever had their gra...
