Between the "cylinders" there are some buds. Some of them are black, I guess no flowers to expect from those.. Yes, those would probably be from last season's flowers - but it's a good sign because it means the plant is mature enough and healthy enough to bloom (or was last season, anyway.)

My mom in Louisiana has the descendent of a pineapple that a relative brought back from Hawaii decades ago. Every few years the thing will throw up a stalk, flower, and make a hand-grenade sized pineapple, the top of which gets rooted and replaces the parent plant when it dies. I think she overwinte...

If there's a way you can post a picture of your plant, that would help. People here are usually happy to hazard a guess if we know what you're looking at.

I repotted the Chamaelobivia hybrid before going on vacation (taken 8/12/2011): http://www.cactiguide.com/forum/userpix/561_DSCF4241sm_1.jpg It looked happy to see me when I got home (taken 8/27/2011): http://www.cactiguide.com/forum/userpix/561_DSCF4467sm_1.jpg Looks like I will get another flush o...

I was going to venture a guess on either Rebutia or Sulco too, just before I saw your response, Daiv. Mmm, that's a possibility too. Guess I will have to wait and see if/when it flowers - I don't have any known Rebutias or Sulcos to compare the spination etc. I'm just glad I haven't killed it yet. ...

Back from vacation and finally had a chance to take a good look at Mystery Plant #1. Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm still not sure - C. crassiepalus has the right color felt but the overall shape and rib count isn't quite the same, while N. herzogiana has similar spines but the felt doesn't mat...

If you take that broken piece and set it gently on top of the soil and ignore it for a few months, it will root.

My cats are continually knocking pieces off mine, so now I have.... several.

I'm going to have to start saving twist ties. This looks promising.
You know you can buy that stuff by the roll and cut it to length, right? It's usually in the garden center with the tomato stakes.

(I do not have space to start grafting, but someday...)

Turning 30 wasn't so bad. I'm a little cautious as to what 40's going to look like in a couple of years though; I'm already noticing the print is getting too small and the floor is further down there than I think it should be. :? It's a good thing I don't have much lawn or I would be tempted to tell...

Anyone want to play Guess This Crest?

Bought NOID, of course. I've had it for a few years and it hasn't flowered yet; thought I'd killed it last winter but it plumped and greened right up when I started watering it this season. It's in a 4-5" pot. http://www.cactiguide.com/forum/userpix/561_DSCF4238sm_1.jpg And a close-up of the sp...
