Winter Temps
Hi there, this will be my first winter with a large number of Cacti. Are all these negative numbers on this list or is that just a dash seperating the plant name and the number? If they are all neg numbers, then These temps are a lot lower than I expected. Most of them are below freezing. I have a b...

San Pedro and Middle Cuts
I've often wondered how many of the folks buying san pedro cuts from ebay are actually buying them in order to eat for the effects they can produce. Complete San Pedro plants and even the cuttings can go for quite a bit on ebay. With shipping, you can pay about $40 for a rooted foot and half plant. ...

I usually use my bare hands but that's because I just don't remeber the gloves or thongs until it's too late and I'm deep in the spines. After that I always tell myself that next time I'm gona wear some good gloves. I spend most of my day at work with a pushpin trying to dig the spines out of my han...

Jeffrey, Sounds like you've answered your own posts. Don't worry, I can relate to the neurosis -there is no way more sure to kill a cactus than to take extra special care of it. I've lost several of those while the ones I neglect thrive. Daiv I know exactly what you mean. I believe that 1/2 ...

Lack of adequate ventilation is also a culprit, but your's are outside, right Jeffrey? Is it in a corner someplace with little ventilation? Bill in SC Yep, this particular plant is outside. It's a young plant. It's a 5 or 6 inch columnar. Except for the very small rot spot, the rest of the plant lo...

Rot in the middle or top of a plant
I noticed a dark spot on a comlumnar cactus near the top. Of couse I poked it was rot. The rotted area is about 1/2 the size of a marble and then it ends. The rest of the plant looks as healthy as a cactus can be. I have noticed mature opuntia pads with like a little half cicle missing out of the si...

I really think I'm just gona stop worring about it. I'm gona do my best to keep healthy plants. If I get some rot, I will just do my best to keep it from happening again. I had a soft plant that was starting to shrink so I said the heck with it and I gave it a large glass of water and today it's har...

Hi Jeffrey- I am definitely not Obi Wan Kanobi, but I have a few questions. Are the parts where your plants are soft discolored, brown, and have you cut into that tissue at all? If you have, is the tissue goopy? This is definitely rot if so. How do you know the plants are soft? What happens when yo...

Soft Bodied Cactus
I have some plants (mainly Mamms and a couple of Parodia magnifica) that are soft. They have been like this for several months. At 1st I figured maybe I was over watering. I would water about once a week and my soil drains well. I use a mixture of Aquatic soil, perlite, and my flavor of the month so...

Help with 2 different Cactus...
I have 2 different cacti that I'm trying to figure out. One is a Mexican Fence Post or Pachycereus marginatus or Stenocereus marginatus. I've seen so many different names for it. The other cactus in question is a Myrtillocactus geometrizans. The Mexican Fence post is one of my favorite plants. I hav...

Fred, I can't be of much help here as I have nearly year-round growing conditions. Some folks here have mastered growing cacti in unlikely places (like England) and they have sound advice. Daiv Hey Daiv... I've noticed you have posted lots of pics of your flowers. If you grow your cacti all year ro...

Re: pictureless plants
Hi Jeffrey- It can be mysterious, ordering from Mesa Garden, since there are no photos of plants. I've gotten around this in two ways. The first is to wander about in their greenhouses and write down names and forms of plants I want. Not practical for all, I know! (also, they aren't set up for reta...

I would have to go with Pilosocereus pachycladus, although the lack of blue is going to no doubt cause some serious objection, I think they might exist both ways. I just don't see it. I have a large Pilosocereus Pachycladus collection and at a super quick glance there may be a few similarities, but...
