Re: The Magic Greenhouse

Recently did a few more complex grafts, and one of them was 6 Astrophytum onto Pereskiopsis. Can't see one of the grafts as it is on the back of the stem at this angle. Collected pollen from the smaller Thelocactus and put it in cold storage yesterday. The large Thelo should flower in the next coupl...

Re: The Magic Greenhouse

It's been cold and rainy outside the last 2 days, so I spwnt time inside doing grafting. Before earlier this year, I haven't grafted any cacti for about 5 years. I did around a dozen Pereskiopsis grafts, all Astrophytum. I also have done my first ever glad wrap graft, an Aztekium valdezii onto a Tri...

Re: The Magic Greenhouse

Yesterday there was a single flower open on my biggest Strombocactis disciformis. I was expecting a couple more flowers to be open today, but had the wonderful surprise of ALL the flowers open, on all three cacti. 4 on one, 8 on the second and lucky 13 flowers on the big one. Of course the paintbrus...

Re: The Magic Greenhouse

Supplies have arrived! The greenhouse is getting a major expansion. As much as 4X more area for growing things! Construction will start this week. I added twin thermometers to the greenhouse, both in the shade just a few centimeters from each other, but one is inside, the other outside. The greenhou...

Re: Hana's cacti

Hi Frank,
That hybrid is amazing. I would try that myself, except my poor luck, my Turbs are just finishing flowering and my Strombos are not quite open yet.

Re: The Magic Greenhouse

I've had a second strange seedling show up in my Astrophytum asterias tray. I will graft this seedling soon and provide updates on the other one. In another tray, I have a good crop of variously colored seedlings that came from both variegated parents. Also, I was able to set up both identical therm...

Re: The Magic Greenhouse

G'morning Alex, It would be bext if there was some degree of variegation that could keep them alive. I keep own-root if the degree of variegation was less than 50%. They can grow but it is very slowly. Unfortunately the degree is not consistent. It will move more or less during growing but you do n...

Re: The Magic Greenhouse

G'morning Alex, I grafted white asterias seedlings before. They reached to the flowering age but they could not make normal flowers. Their lives were short evenif they were grafted. I hope your seedlings live longer and make normal flowers. The attached photo is one of grafted white seedlings. Fran...

Re: The Magic Greenhouse

For better or worse, I grafted the strange looking seedling today. I grafted the bottom half of it seperately as well, that might actually take and be a backup.
Keep your fingers crossed that it not only takes, but grows spectacularly.
I can't wait to see what it looks like mature.

Re: The Magic Greenhouse

Today is the last day of Winter.
I can't wait for it to be away.
Will be better again when everything is in full grow mode but one thing at a time.

Re: Mrs.Green windowsills-growing cacti against the odds

With reguards to the cryptocarpic Mammillarias (Mamm theresae being a great example), the seeds and fruit are never naturally exposed while the parent plant is alive. The seeds only get dispersed once the parent plant has died and rotted open. And when you go to plant seeds like that, sometimes you ...

Re: The Magic Greenhouse

And speaking of grafting, I have grafted 4 almost white seedlings from red flowering, variegated asterias parents.
I can't wait until I see some of these growing.

Beautiful photos. I love your Astrophytums. How many do you have?
The little guest looks like they had fun in your greenhouse. I hope they got out safely.
