Re: Normal cacti residents

I would think the only real way to know the age is if you can see where growth stopped and started each year. It would work best on columnar cacti. Some cacti you can tell, others not. As for flies, they probably are no big deal unless you are talking about fungus gnats. If you have them it means yo...

Re: Duvalia corderoyi: too much water?

Do you have any shade cloth or anything else to reduce light levels in your greenhouse? Plants can roast in there from a combination of too much sun and heat in a way they don't outside. I have 50% shade cloth covering mine.

Re: Ariocarpus kotschoubeyanus

Are you sure the pots are drying out that fast, or are you just checking the top of the soil? I know N. Africa can get hot in the summer, but not really much different than Southern Arizona temperature wise. People there aren't watering cacti that often.

Re: Plant found along the Arizona-Colorado border

I was really confused at first as Arizona and Colorado's border is literally a point. But I think you mean the AZ-CA border along the Colorado River. That distinction is important as I think it is Asclepias erosa (Desert Milkweed) which would be along the AZ-CA border but not the four corners area. ...

Re: "Stuck " Lithops

The difficulty of growing multiple Lithops in one pot. Even the same species and almost identical plants. Needs two things. First, some time (and preferably heat and sun) to dry out the old leaves. Second, some water to expand the new leaves and burst through the old ones. You may be able to do thi...

Re: Giant cacti in the Mojave?

I can see why you might think it was E. terscheckii but those flowers are a much closer match for a Saguaro. That location is only about 100 miles from its native range, and is on the edge of the Sonoran. It may be getting some extra water which could lead it to grow and flower a bit differently.

Re: Ariocarpus kotschoubeyanus

This is one of the most sensitive Ariocarpus to the sun. Go easy, and probably provide some afternoon shade even when they are adapted. Your plants look very "open", possibly having been grown quickly in low light, but might have been slightly scorched since then. Soil is a controversial ...

Re: Entangled roots - how to separate??

Just to clarify the last two comments a bit. What you buy in the store called "cactus soil" is terrible and should not be used for any cactus or succulent. The bag is lying to you. Get a bunch of pumice if you can find it (check a real nursery, not a box store) and mix it roughly 70% pumic...

Re: Hawthoria disinformation

That should work. Just keep an eye on it and if it starts showing signs of sun stress move it. Otherwise keep it there. Haworthia are fine outside until the first frosts hit.

Re: Hawthoria disinformation

You'll fry most of them, especially the "softer, fatter" kinds if you put them in full sun in California or probably most places in the western US. But in the east they probably could take full sun, and I think the same for Europe. Where do you live? Haworthias, along with the closely rela...

Re: Entangled roots - how to separate??

You are going to have to rip it somewhat, but I'd suggest starting by filling a bucket with water and submerging the rootball. Try and work out the dirt and at the same time feel if any of the plants is starting to come loose. Often getting rid of the soil helps the roots come apart.

Re: Origins of Aloe vera

That seems good enough to me for distribution. This really has me wondering if something that sloppy really made it in the paper. So I'll try to read it in detail this weekend to see if the authors talk about it somewhere that I missed. I suspect not though as I did a word search for the three islan...

Re: Origins of Aloe vera

Yes I saw that bar but I did make the mistake of not paying attention that A. benishangulana, A. mawii, & A. schelpii were included. Assuming they are wrong with that bar, which is what you are suggesting, then it doesn't change anything I said. It just makes them wrong. Remember that I said I d...

Re: Origins of Aloe vera

I didn't have time to read it in depth (I'll try to later), but I skimmed through with your question in mind. Keep in mind I'm in no way an expert on Aloes, so I can't talk about how the taxonomy matches up with the phylogeny. Also, I didn't want to get bogged down in the materials and methods, so I...
