Re: Winter damage
Mine grow outside and it got down to 19 degrees for several nights. On the new growth, the tips are damaged and starting to turn brown. Freeze damage. The older parts no signs of damage yet. Last year it had some damage in the middle of the column and now that area is just scarred. Look at the tips...

Re: Winter damage
Joel - San Pedro's are supposed to be good down to 18F -- but not frost, so sheet should be OK. I've got mine on my glass porch & last Winter it did get that low with no problems! Just went out & gave mine a gentle squeeze & there's a little "give", but no visible wrinkles lik...

Winter damage
Hello everybody and Happy Holidays, I have a question concerning San Pedro cactus. I live in zone 9 in southern Louisiana and I have a 6ft San Pedro in a very large clay pot. With it being winter now I'm alittle concerned. We've only had three days so far whereby it got down to 30 degrees (not inclu...

Re: raised bed question
I am in southwest louisiana and in the process of starting a small raised bed for a few cacti. How is yours doing? And what did you use to make the cactus soil part? Did you put drainage rocks beneath the soil? I was baseing mine on a design for an alpine rock garden but would love to know what act...

Re: Keeping track of your collection?
I use Microsoft excel and it works fine for me. I can see you do it in an Excell. But do you put your pics in too? And if you do, how do you do it? Thank you. Yes I put my pics too. You can insert them. Plus size them. I've seen databases on Access as well but I've never worked with Access. Am more...

Re: Got a Hold of some Decomposed Granite
Yes you can use decomposed granite. I wouldn't use pea gravel because of its smooth surface. I wish I could find DG small enough to use in my amended soil for my cacti. Right now I use oil absorbent.

Re: Repottted Golden Barrel
Now I just hope, over time, the lower spines can return to some-what normal positions instead of pushed it because of being in a pot.

Re: Repottted Golden Barrel
It hasn't flowered yet this year but am looking forward to flowers hopefully soon. I used some strips of carpet to lift and move it. The hardest thing was getting it out of its old pot. I've always used clay pots reusing them as needed. In this case I had no choice but to take a hammer and shatter t...

Repottted Golden Barrel
Finally be able to repot my large golden barrel. As you can see it's been in its previous pot for so long the spines are flat on the lower half due to growing against the pot. It's about 16" across so I repotted it in a whiskey barrel pot. The new pot is deeper than I would like it to be but it...

Re: fire ants in the soil
i kept most of mine indoors in a sunny room all winter with the exception of a blue glow agave and 2 unidentified aloes and another agave. i'll probably have to do that next year, i'm running out of room for all my cacti. what'd you do about rains? wouldn't the rains rot them while they were dorman...

[quote=" and joel, how have your cacti held up during these strangely long and cold winter?[/quote] Tlaloc my cacti have done quite well with no loss for the past 4 years all being outside year round. Now I have a greenhouse with the hardier remaining on my front porch. If it gets too cold like...
