Re: Defective flowers
…the soil I had bought was contaminated with broad-leaf herbicide… Many thanks for pointing this out! I didn't think of it till now but, if not the main reason it may still be a factor to consider. I have no information about how the red worm & sheep manure were treated, as I buy them as ready ...

Re: Defective flowers
Thanks! I would have seen these, but I don't have such beasts around. And the defective flowers have no scars of been eaten. In most of the cases the petals come out joined to one another forming a tube and only the tips are separate. In other cases the petals are separate, but there are no male or ...

Re: Defective flowers
Thank you all for the replies! (I'm almost sure I've seen a topic here, where somebody shared a photo of an Ariocarpus with lace-like petals, but I'm not good at using forum search engines, so I couldn't find it to quote here). :-? I live in an urban area, with more or less polluted air, but I don't...

Defective flowers
I've been hesitating for a while to post my problem here, but here it is. I'm having defective flowers on many of my plants. It all started in 2012. And I do not seem to find an explanation yet. I've been analyzing what did I do wrong to trigger such abnormality, but most likely it is a mix of facto...

Re: Cacti Guides' Lophophora Guide
That's a catalog number, not a field number. Concerning the name, since there is no authorship, it is likely to be far-fetched…DaveW wrote:…Anybody know who the "R" numbers concerned are?

Here they are. 29.03.2012 Corynopuntia clavata http://media.snimka.bg/s1/0290/026824133-special.jpg No problems at all. 29.03.2012 Opuntia engelmannii var. engelmannii http://media.snimka.bg/s1/0290/026824129-special.jpg Damaged, but not severely. I hope it will recover and grow nicely. 29.03.2012 O...

Re: Can they take -23 °C at night for a few days?
Thank you all for the replies! Well, there are a few glitches in this year's approach, which I have yet to figure out. I wrote I had them continuously wet for over a month. Most responded with the desired inflation and flower buds, but some gave me worries. 1. I guess I've been just on the edge with...

Re: CactiGuide.com Big Picture Project
daiv , I believe a lot of cacti enthusiasts get puzzled when it comes to plants' Latin names pronunciation. Including me. Wouldn't it be nice to have a phonetic part in the genera and species names on cactiguide.com, hopefully with stress marks? I.e. I've no idea what is the right way to pro...

Re: Can they take -23 °C at night for a few days?
I would consider the test successful. :) The images below show side by side the plants before their first soak and a month later. Pedio - and Sclerocactus got their watering on 19.02.2012, and the rest a week later (25.02.2012). The latest images are from 24.03.2012. All plants have been kept wet ev...

Re: Can they take -23 °C at night for a few days?
hoteidoc , thanks for chiming in! These guys are outdoors, but under shelter October to February. Autumn and early Winter here is too wet and they wouldn't do without protection. The "shelter" is a sheet of PE, open 2 sides to ensure ventilation. I do not let a snow cover to form over the...

Re: Can they take -23 °C at night for a few days?
A 4-th consecutive day with small "+" numbers during the day and small "-" numbers at night. Sunny from time to time… A perfect time for all Pediocactus to have their first water shot! And they got it today. :) Here are all the participants in 2012 Winter's frost test (-20 °C): h...

Re: My surgery patient
Looking at the central vascular tissue, the plant is gone. Probably it is the same with the vascular veins to the areoles. I'd throw it away.
