3 babies to identify

I bought 3 baby cacti at a local plant store today but they had no tags on them. I was wondering if someone could IF them or a least give me a genus so I can try to research them further. image.jpeg Here are the three of them. image.jpeg I'm pretty sure this is a stenocactus though I'm not sure abou...

Yellowing leaves on Fockea edulis

I have a Fockea edulis that I recently bought. When I first got it, it had a decent amount of leaves, but now almost all of them have yellowed and fallen off. I can't figure out why they are yellowing and falling off. I thought it may be because the soil was too wet but the soil is completely dry no...

Fockea edulis root question

So I've just bought a Fockea edulis and I would like to display the caudex above ground, but it looks like, up until this point, almost all of the caudex has been below ground. There are 2 clumps of roots coming out of the caudex near the top that I would like to remove in order to display the caude...

Clover Mites

Hello, Lately I've been noticing 1 or 2 clover mites hanging around on my cacti and succulents. I never see more than two at a time and they just seem to be wandering around, not eating the cactus (though it's hard to tell because they are small). The outside of my apartment is absolutely crawling w...

Re: How soft should a mammilaria be?

While I don't have an answer to your question, I was wondering the same thing. I also have a cactus that is red and soft where it had been under the soil. Judging by the photo you gave, I think we might have the same kind of cactus so I'm wondering if maybe this is just a characteristic of the cactu...

Re: Advice on growing lithops from seed

I have a large block of coconut coir that I could use...but I have to desalinate it first. Would coir be better for lithops than the commercial cactus mix? I originally got the coir because I know cacti like it. I just haven't used it yet because I wasn't sure how to go about desalinating it.

Advice on growing lithops from seed

I bought a small package of mixed lithops seeds as a fun experiment for the spring. I've always been intimidated by lithops but I decided to finally give them a try. I know they need extremely fast draining soil with very little actual soil in it but I need some advice about what kind of soil to sow...

Re: Root and Base Rot on Dioscorea

My potting medium is approximately a 1:1:1 mix of store bought cactus soil, Pumice, and perlite with slightly more pumice and perlite. My watering schedule has been very sparse because I've already had issues with the soil not drying out. I think the main issue is that it's winter where I live (high...

Root and Base Rot on Dioscorea

Tonight I discovered that my dioscorea elephantipes which had gotten some rotted roots a month or so ago had a mushy base and seemed to be rotting again. I immediately unpotted it. The base was soft and a little squishy to the touch but not mushy. I decided to do surgery on it but was really surpris...

Re: Dioscorea elephantipes root rot

Well none of the caudex that I can touch feels soft, including where the indentation/cavity is that I was wondering about. So I think it is okay. I just wasn't sure if it was a bad sign.

Just for future reference, what would you use to disinfect a rotted spot?

Dioscorea elephantipes root rot

Hello, Last night I realized the dirt I had my dioscorea elephantipes planted in was much too rich and not drying out fast enough. So I immediately un-potted it to get the wet dirt away from the caudex. I think I got to it just in time. There was a large amount of rotted roots. I cleaned off the dir...

Re: Yes this is rot. Will it survive?

I'm a little late with this update but alas, it died. I don't know what happened. I got rid of the rot and tried to let it dry out but it just kept getting mushier and mushier. It started leaking brown fluid and became so mushy that I couldn't pick it up any more. So who knows what was really wrong ...

Mammillaria vetula ssp. gracilis offsets

I just bought a mammillaria vetula gracilis and while it was in transit and also while I was potting it, several of the offsets feel off of the plant. The biggest offset is propbably the size of the end of my pinky finger. I know this is a species which offsets regularly and easily and I was hoping ...

Calibanus hookeri question

After pining away for a calibanus hookeri for an entire year, I finally bought one. However, I'm not sure when this plant goes dormant. Does it grow in summer or winter? Both of my other caudiciforms (dioscorea elephantipes & Fouquieria columnaris) are fall/winter growers and I'm thinking my cal...

Re: Yes this is rot. Will it survive?

Yes I am definitely going to amend my potting soil mix. This cactus was the first cactus I ever owned and thus subjected to my inexperience with soil. I had already noticed that the soil it was in was not drying out quickly enough before it started leaning. I'm hopeful it will survive since the rest...
