Joshua Trees, Yucca brevifolia. No two are alike. Plus, they basically define the boundaries of the Mojave desert.

Typical cat response. "I meant to do that. Yep."

Cactus behaving strangely

Here are a couple of odd Ferocactus cylindraceus I've come across. I'd love to know what strange cactus growth habits other folks have observed. http://www.cactiguide.com/forum/userpix/430_cactus_1_2.jpg http://www.cactiguide.com/forum/userpix/430_cactus_2_2.jpg http://www.cactiguide.com/forum/userp...

Rice plants apparently have genes linked to sound reception. Unfortunately you can't read all of this article unless you're a subscriber, but the snippet gives the gist of it...

Below freezing temps here in Vegas? It could happen, I'd say, late November - early January, but actual FROST is very rare, since the air is so dry. We rarely even get condensation when it's warm. The teen-aged kids of a friend of mine had never seen dew, and didn't understand one morning how the ca...

Never heard of Cactus by Lin.

I don't know when Joe sold his cactus business, so I can't tell whether the "before" is like the "after"!

Ohhh, the low rainfall definitely doesn't help! I was thinking more of garden plants, which get irrigated. Even then, it's tough to grow things here. My back yard is a no-cactus zone, and the list of things I have tried to grow out there, and failed, is far larger than the list of things that have s...

I'd love to share some of the Opuntia, but I checked with the Nevada Dept. of agriculture today, and if I want to send any cacti pieces through the mail, I have to have an agent come out and inspect my cacti for pests first, and presumably check to see that I don't have anything illegal. Then, I get...

Thanks for the help! Unfortunately, I have no way of knowing where the salmon cactus came from. I'm interested to try growing some seeds, and see what I get.

Hi fellow New Englander! Well, I used to be, anyway. I'm a Maine native. I still have relatives there, and it Pittsfield, Mass.

I also used to do a bit of rockhounding as a kid, garnets, beryl, amethyst, and the like.

Glad you like Bob! (The name is from Sideshow Bob on the Simpsons, because of his spiky hair.) The Mojave is one of the toughest places in the country to grow things, because it gets BOTH hot summers, AND cold winters. Most plants can handle one extreme or the other, but not both. We get plenty of d...
