Re: Root mealy bugs
I changed the soil then drenched the soil with systemic insecticide, and yes the problem got fixed and checked a few months later and they were nowhere to be seen. Perhaps the plants I'm unsure of should use the same soil but drench the soil with the pesticide instead of having to check the roots a...

Re: Root mealy bugs
Has anyone ever dealt with root mealy bugs? I use a systemic insecticide, change soil and clean the roots to deal with the problem. Did it fix the problem? Perhaps depends what order you did things in. Drenching the soil with insecticide and then throwing it all away might be counter-productive :) ...

I've tried to water it a couple of days back, we'll see what happens. I'm prepared to expect anything.

Re: Echinocereus concern
I've also seen areas that look watery, which prompts me to think overwatering. This one might be off to an early grave but I hope not.iann wrote:Already lost its roots by the sound of it ...

Echinocereus concern
I've got a E. reichenbachii that I'm concerned about but I dont have a photo. Some of the areoles have brownish spots and when I press against it it feels squishy. I do water it carefully but its late autumn where I am. I know that I should be giving it a rest but I water occassionally to ensure tha...

What I've noticed
Sometimes when I see succulents for sale especially those with thick beady leaves I will observe these mumerous small dark discoloured spots on the leaves which look suspicious. This prompts me to think of some sort of fungal disease. Sorry no photo available to show what I mean. My guess would be t...

Mealies with neem oil
I've discovered a small infestation of mealy bugs on two of my plants. I've applied it topically and applied through the roots since it's supposed to work as a systemic insecticide. Here's one question I want to ask, do cacti absorb water through their areoles? If this is true then the cacti would'v...

Help with Hoodia
It's my understanding that Hoodia is very sensitive to rot from overwatering and thus difficult to keep. For those who've kept Hoodia, what's your advice? I would consider grafting onto a grafting stock to make them easier? Or an interesting idea might be to spray the entire plant with water when it...

Hi there!! I'm not an expert and my experience is rather limited (Started keeping cacti 6 months ago),but i do own a hoodia specimen, and what i can tell you is that, yes, its root rot prone due to overwatering and lack of fresh air. Also from what i can remember cuttings don't work with the hoodia...

Any experience with Hoodia gordonii?
I recently got one and discovered that it looked odd and checked more closely and found fungus growing around the base. I then dissected it and salvaged one clean piece. Every where else I cut had black discolouration. This was from a specialised cacti and succulent nursery but still it got infected...
