Re: seedlings and high temps
Definitely too hot for copiapoa, lobivia, eriosyce, rebutia, or most cacti from high altitude.

Adenium socotranum
Hello everyone, Last year I purchased a couple of Adenium socotranum from C&D (on the right in the photo) and I also purchased a couple from Plants out of Africa (pictured on the left.) My question is this: Why do the grow so differently? The plant from C&D on the right, and another socotran...

Re: Flood advisories in so Ca?
I am right in the middle of San Diego metro area and we got about 3/4 inch over night. This weather is strange considering the fact that it has been mostly hot and dry in the 70s and 80s for the past month and a half. I have some Conos planted outside in pots containing other winter growers like Alo...

One thing you might want to do is go over the ink on your labels with pencil. A couple of months of bright light and the ink will fade so much you won't be able to tell what you wrote, you might think you will remember, but remembering with accuracy is the hard part. Echinocactus horizonthalonius is...

Re: Sterilization techniques
Here is a picture of two containers from last year I got full of Thai food, maybe that was when I got the idea. I washed them out, boiled up some filthy old used soil in the containers themselves, and just dumped in non sterilized seed I harvested from my own seed pods. Since everything was free, I ...

Re: Sterilization techniques
Hi Kristian, I was just about to post about this exact topic. I tried the baggie method a couple of times in the last couple of years with mixed success. I didn't like how the bags crumple down unless they are propped up with sterilized sticks on the inside, thats extra work right there. I didn't li...

Hi Robb,
Most of the Epithelantha seeds were from "Klub Kaktusaru Hradek Kralove" which can be found at kaktusyhk.cz. They all had excellent germination except the illerae potosina seeds.

Re: Justsaynotocactus 2015 seedling plan
So, I finely got my big order from Cactus Hobby BRNO a couple of weeks ago and started planting. Three orders from them were in one box and it disappeared from the mail for at least five weeks. I was very depressed about the whole thing for a while, but I started planting my other seed orders anyway...

WOW, You are right, I should have thought to look for synonyms. They're pretty cheap too.

Re: Minime8484 Seed Growing Adventures - 2015
Where's the Cleistocactus xylorhizus? Joel Lode was selling them a few years ago, but he was sold out by the time I was done searching his incredibly annoying stupid seed list full of sold out items. I have been searching for years but no one is selling seeds of this species anywhere.

Re: Cucurbit Sowing
You can sprout them and grow them for the first year exactly like you would any other curcurbit. Maybe a little less fertilizer than a Pumpkin, but otherwise similar to growing cucumbers and gourds. In their second year you can treat them more like a succulent, but leafy caudexed vines tend to take ...

Re: Are kalanchoe toxic like euphorbia?
Kalanchoe are toxic, but they don't taste good and nothing will even try to eat them, not bugs, not birds, not cats, nor dogs. I don't get poisoned because I am usually throwing them strait into a garbage can whenever I find them. They are a terrible invasive pest here.

Re: Justsaynotocactus 2015 seedling plan
Hi Steve, Thanks for looking at the list, considering the post editor took out the three columns I worked so hard on tabbing out and ran all the words together. Anyway, the only species I have ever had a problem with are: Conophytum achabense(seedlings die), Ecactus horizonthalonius, Mamm luethyi,ma...

Justsaynotocactus 2015 seedling plan
So I have been ordering seeds since October and now I am finely all done with ordering for the year. Instead of impulsively planting them all at once, this year I have decided to plant them in a staggered fashion as the weather warms up. First, I planted the Conophytums at the beginning of winter, a...

Re: Winter time in California
Most of my cacti have been out in the rain all winter and I actually can't find any casualties attributable to the rain itself. Most of the cacti that have died were dying of sun scorch from this summer, the cold and rain was just the last nail in the coffin. They have been pretty wet for at least s...
