Re: What advice do you wish someone told you as a new grower
1) When bringing them home and repotting, don't be afraid to blast them with the hose to get the old soil off the roots. 2) They'll be totally fine in just regular potting soil mixed with a crapload of perlite. They're SUPPOSED to be in something that holds water for SOME amount of time; don't just ...

Re: HooKed Spines
"I will never own a hook-spined cactus" I told myself, before I picked up this pup machine (Mammillaria zeilmanniana) for 50 cents.
Here it is today, after two years.

Re: What was your first cactus ever?
Mine was a fairy castle, the one in my avatar. But I didn't know what kind of cactus it was when I got it, so I had to google "cactus with glued on flowers" (this was before I knew this was a thing that was done with many species). It eventually died, though, as did several of the first fe...

Re: Favorite Mamms?
It's hard to single out one species from such a large genus. I'll post two of my favourite that are usually not mentioned Mammillaria_meridiorosei_Dar154_320_20150327.jpg Mammillaria wrightii subsp. wilcoxii (meridiorosei) Dar154. Killer flowers. Re: Finally starting some seeds
Lost an alarming number of seedlings in two of the mixed pots, and the Rebutia pot just suddenly exploded into mold. Had to break out the tweezers, spray bottle, and hydrogen peroxide.
Here's how these look now.

Re: I have another Gymno!
I'd add a load of perlite to the cactus's soil. I do still have a big bag of perlite.iann wrote:Normally you wouldn't want to pot Marigolds and Gymnocalyciums in the same soil

I have another Gymno!
From Corona Cactus. My first ever online cactus order. Gymnocalycium eurpleurum. IMG_5030.JPG I've been mainly focusing on orchids for the past couple years, but orchid prices frustrate me (most of the cheap ones end up being like $30 because of shipping), so I thought I'd take a break and buy a che...

Re: Finally starting some seeds
Rebutia minuscula count is now at 11.
As for the mixed seedlings, not much to update on, other than the ones that aren't dead and moldy already are very very slowly getting nice and fat.

Re: Don't ignore the small pots!
I prefer small pots anyway for price and space reasons, especially since I have to bring all my cacti indoors for the winter.
(Plus if you or someone in your family eats yogurt, then you've got some free small pots right there once the yogurt is eaten)

The mixed seedlings are taking their sweet time with any progress; meanwhile, more of the Rebutia seeds are coming up (7 so far).

Re: Finally starting some seeds
A couple of them now have their areoles starting to separate into more areoles. (Also I still have a bunch of years-old Rebutia minuscula seeds and sowed a few of them in a tiny pot to see if they would still be any good, even though as I understand, Rebutia seeds are supposed to have a relatively s...

Re: Finally starting some seeds
Lost a couple seedlings, most are still looking great, and many are getting spines!
Been keeping an eye on the mold, and it hasn't been causing too much trouble.

Re: Finally starting some seeds
Ah, didn't know I was actually supposed to be aiming for dark green. The ones in that pot are now, though (except for the two that just came up within the last couple days), so I guess they just needed some time for that. The roots appear to have mostly sorted themselves. Also I've got a few mold sp...
