Re: You don't need a better camera!

Ummm...none in my area but does snow from time to time up the mountains not far from here.
Did however see quite a bit of it back home in Sweden where I grew up.

Re: You don't need a better camera!

I've had mixed luck with 3rd party batteries and cheap SD cards in the past. Got some cheap aftermarket batteries for an old DSLR once upon a time and they lasted all of 6 months before they stopped taking a charge. Lithium batteries need to keep some charge in them to stay functioning, most do it b...

Re: You don't need a better camera!

For memory cards I'd suggest to buy the fastest card the camera can handle, likely in this case an SDXC Class 10 card. Can usually tell what Class a card is by a number inside a "bucket" on the card. Won't matter much in regular photography unless you start using the full 10 FPS the camera...

Re: You don't need a better camera!

Same goes for long lens use, getting enough DOF can be a hassle at times especially if there's multiple subjects. As for the downsides of high Mp cameras, files are huge and to make the most of them for either web use or print you have to print or upload huge files. Case in point, here's a shot as i...

Re: You don't need a better camera!

Circular vs Linear mostly mattered with the DSLR focusing system as far as I know. Phase detect systems as was (and still is) used in DSLR's couldn't handle the old linear filters hence the circular filters, most mirrorless cameras can focus with either mounted. Mind you though, age old linear polar...

Re: Who has the oldest cactus?

Somewhere on a harddrive I've got a photo from Uppsala Botanical gardens in Sweden of a Cereus something, clearly a cutting but going by the tag it was cataloged by Carl Linnaeus. And knowing he passed in 1778 it could potentially be among the oldest known plants still in cultivation.

Re: Shooting RAW?

Shoot 100% RAW and have done so for years (apart from a long period when I had the camera set to RAW+JPG). Generally does mean you have to do some processing as RAW files usually have no in camera adjustments like sharpening, noise reduction or tweaks. They tend to look a tad bland straight out of c...

Re: Anyone need some M. geometrizans cuttings?

Sad to see it go but being in the pool area with young grandkids it was just starting to get too much of a hazard. Had it's last laugh though, gave me enough cuts and stings that it today hurts closing my left hand. Been digging spine tips out all day with needle and tweezers, still have one or 2 st...

Anyone need some M. geometrizans cuttings?

I seem to have stumbled into a "few" meters of the stuff somehow. In seriousness, the finally came when my backyard monster needed to be tackled, with it's increasing size it was just too large for the little area it was planted in. Also leaning over the fence into the neighbors yard...

Re: Some interesting YouTube videos.

I guess I both can agree and disagree with the whole Mp race. Recently did a rather odd thing for a "birder" in retiring my 24Mp APS-C camera for a 42Mp full frame. Mind you it was also going from a 2011 camera to one released in late 2016 so the sensor tech would of taken a few leaps forw...

Re: 3 decades of telezoom

Yep, most likely the "free" limit that's kicked in. Reason I left was their snap change to their terms & conditions.
Coming up to the same decision soon when it comes to Flickr, starting to get awfully close to having to go "Pro".

Re: 3 decades of telezoom

Crikey that was quite the thread resurrection! 6 years! Long since moved on 2 of the lenses and the old A350 is now gathering dust as I've gone through 2 camera updates since. First 5 years with a Sony A77 and a tad over 2 months ago to a Sony A99ii. As for the images, it's photobucket doing somethi...

Re: What is up with this?

Once they get to a certain size these things start throwing out new arms like crazy so it's perfectly normal. Don't think I have any photos of my inground one that photobucket haven't killed but last year I had to take a hacksaw to it as it was just getting too large. A year on and it's now busy wor...

Re: Birds!

Been quiet in here for a while and it seems that photobucket killed all my images. Since the last post I've only got more and more hooked by birding though I still have the yearly contact sport of weeding out the cactus garden to look forward to. Some from the last few months, all can be followed ba...

Re: You don't need a better camera!

Guess I'm one of the "dinosaurs" that still swear by a DSLR and an appropriate lens, with emphasis on lens as a quality lens on an entry level camera will hands down beat a pro camera with a dud lens anyday! Though on the other hand saying better and higher Mp going hand in hand isn't 100%...
