Re: Welcome Craig Fry!

I'm a big fan of Turbinicarpus pseudpectinatus, and an even bigger fan of how you grow and photograph it.

Do you have a larger photo (larger file), something with a little more detail? The posted photo is 12KB in size and lacks any detail.

Re: How many plants do you have?

Gosh, probably 1500. It was approximately 1000 a year ago. I don't completely specialize, but I have many "themes"…mini-specializations. For instance Adromischus , Cotyledon , and Tylecodon …10 different Adenia species…Socotra species…many different Bursera , Commiphora , and Boswellia . M...

Re: Buying my first cactus, please help ID

Yeah I have a nice one overfilling an 8" clay pot. $1 to someone who wants to take it away. Handsome plants and not hard, but some of the worst glochids in the genus.

Re: What the...?

I think CCC's mix can do fine if it's mixed with mostly pumice or perlite/pumice mix. But yeah I wouldn't use it unmixed. I'm using "dirty pumice" lately. I dempen some pumice and mix in some DG until it looks dirty, but it's still 90% pumice by volume…sometimes adding a little Bio-Tone or...

Re: Can I use this as part of my soil mix?

I know you already got your answer, but I'll add what I learned. Sphagnum is used a lot in the commercial production of orchids for sale. It retains so much water that they only need to fog the growing area, as I understand it. Unfortunately once hobby growers get those production plants home, sphag...

Re: Cuttings and Clonex in mid summer

I am growing on a dozen cuttings of Trichocereus pachanoi, one of my first cactus acquisitions. I did many things wrong: I was using too much (50%) Super Soil or Miracle Gro soil in my home "cactus mix" back then. I left them in the shade too long and they grew etiolated before I knew what...

Re: spine mealies outta control!

Hi CactusFanDan, you say to "dab them", but how could you dab thousands of mealies, especially on a plant with lots of spines and crevices? Or do you dab around them, and the volatiles affect mealies within a short range? I'm just trying to envision the technique. I finally got over my pes...
