Re: Hardy cactus from Arizona
I was just worried about them rotting because it had been raining every day for over a week. I thought they might turn to mush if I just planted them fresh, but I ended up planting them anyway after a few days and now they're doing great. The main plant was growing in regular yard dirt, but the gard...

Re: Hardy cactus from Arizona
Yeah, these cuttings got all wrinkly and dead looking while I was waiting for them to dry out before planting them, so I ended up just sticking them in the soil before they showed any roots even though it was rainy and cold.. Then all of a sudden they perked right up, started growing new pads and fl...

Hardy cactus from Arizona
I got cuttings of this cactus last month from my friend's uncle. He had it growing in his yard up here in zone 6, and told me his mother had originally brought cuttings of the plant home decades ago from Arizona. The plant in the yard was pretty low growing, no more than a foot off the ground. I was...

Re: Outdoor Opuntia in Virginia, species ID?
The main plant down in Virginia was doing fine and dandy last summer when I saw it. Two years ago they had a cruddy winter down there while I was visiting. Snowed 8 inches one night and the roads were frozen solid for a few days due to a lack of plows, so the plant can apparently withstand at least ...

Re: Outdoor Opuntia in Virginia, species ID?
Thanks for the replies. Looks like Virginia Beach is either 8a or 7b. I live on the border of 6a and 6b, so it would be quite a bit colder. Here's some pictures of the plant I have. http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh108/Bett_174/Random%20Stuff/Plants/IMAG0629.jpg http://i254.photobucket.com/album...

Outdoor Opuntia in Virginia, species ID?
I found this large Opuntia growing on the edge of someone's yard in southern Virginia about 2 years ago. It was right next to the sidewalk and there was a broken pad on the ground, so I picked it up and took it home. I've been growing the plant in a pot since I got it, but I'm wondering if it's poss...

Stapelia gigantea cuttings, for sale, trade, or free
I have a bunch of S. gigantea cuttings that I have no use for, so I thought I'd offer them to everyone here as a semi-giveaway. I saved them from the garbage months ago in the fall, and they've been sitting in my basement, not potted, ever since I brought them home (they were exposed to low 40s temp...

Re: new cacti need names
Looks like Ferocactus and Oroya are a match. The third one does look like it could be Weberbauerocereus. It's starting to make longer spines towards the top, while some of the others of its type at school had much longer spines all over and others had just the short, fine spines. Are the long spines...

new cacti need names
I got me some new cacti recently, but I've only narrowed a few down to the genus names. Anyone have any ideas? These first 3 I got at my school last month. There was some event going on where they were giving away cacti and ceramic pots to decorate, so I picked out a few nice plants. They're all in ...

Yep, you sent me some seeds. I'll have to try grafting some when I eventually sow them and get some seedlings. I have a bunch more of the Pereskiopsis that I'm growing separately. I have one at home that I grafted a variegated Opuntia monacantha pup to. It hasn't started growing much yet, seems to b...

Some of my first grafts: wow they grow fast!
So I finally got a hold of some Pereskiopsis the other month and started some grafts. The gymno pups I wanted to graft ended up dying, but I had had them sitting around too long I think. I'd had them for at least 2 months before I brought them home to graft and since they were chlorophylless mutants...

Using concrete for indoor pots?
My cactus and succulent collection is growing faster than my pot collection is. I've been using paper pots lately for small cuttings, and yogurt cups with drainage holes for larger plants. These aren't very permanent solutions though, and I don't want to pay a dollar a pot for the small terra cotta ...
