Re: How much light is enough?

Is there an efficient way to grow adults indoors without severe etiolating? I have no idea how much wattage they would need to stay healthy. I'd think upwards of 500 W/sq ft using a nice metal halide lamp. Have a look for some of Christer Johansson's posts. He grows adult plants under light and man...

It's not even winter yet! Always good to get them going early though. I'll probably start in the next few weeks. :)

Re: What is the secret of Gymnocalycium Saglione?

They have small seeds, so probably don't remain viable for more than a season or two. You might want to try a different seed source.

Re: The mineralists

Why does this even need discussion? Is there anyone who has been growing cacti for more than 18 months that still thinks a bag of peat and a bit of perlite is a remotely sensible thing to grow them in? Rocks and dirt, usually with a little organic material. Most everything else (including the semi-...

Re: Seed Care

Most cactus seeds have a good longevity, so storing them over winter doesn't present many problems. Just don't leave them in a really humid place. As others have said: cool and dry is good. More necessary for long-term storage though. :)

Re: An unexpected seedling.

Their seeds are as small as, or even smaller, than Aztekium seeds, so that can present problems. Really cute looking seedling. :)

Re: Why do novices always use clay pots?

I have a big Leuchtenbergia prinicipis in a clay pot, but I'd rather move it out and into a bigger plastic pot. If you can't grow plants in plastic pots without them rotting, then perhaps you need to smash up your clay pots into small chunks and mix them into your soil.

Re: My seed growing thread 2013 (Updated 30th Aug' '14)

Thanks for the comments everyone! :) I think the growth could be due to a combination of my propagator (18 hours of light every day, warmth and a good light intensity), the baggy method and my soil mix. Ariocarpus grow quite quickly when young if you keep them warm, in not too bright light and and i...

Re: Does anyone now how to grow Ornithogalum sardienii?

Almost All bulbs are Winter growers, Ledebouria being the obvious outlier with Summer growth Same goes for Massonia wittebergensis and Drimia. And some Drimiopsis, Bulbine, Hypoxis, Haemanthus, Ammocharis, Boophone disticha (although some forms occur in Winter rainfall areas). There are undoubtedly...

Funny you should bring up the Ariocarpus as I repotted them all a few days ago. Here's the haul, about 1 year and 8 months old. The biggest one has a 7cm taproot. :)

Haha, that's brilliant. :) It's always a great day when the Avonias are in bloom (usually because they pick a day with nice weather!).
