Re: Cactus identification help request
huernia schneideriana is the most common that looks like that. Thanks. This photo came in a separate e-mail. It was labelled simply Huernia flower photo. http://i1288.photobucket.com/albums/b486/Larry438CH/MOicid_X_MA1_1400073827aol_1_zps38bf6372.jpg I think you are right. At least, schneideriana i...

Re: Cactus identification help request
STOP THE PRESSES!! This morning I received reply from Midge who had been on vacation. The other plant is an huernia. Its flower is a red star at the base of the plant. So what is the thing you don't like about stapelia ,A little stinky? I love the pod that develops into the flower. It reminds me of ...

Re: Cactus identification help request
I concede. It must be Stapelia. Couldn't get hold of friend who gifted me with it. It just looks more similar to pictures at the Stapelia websites than it does to any of the Euphorbia I looked at. No, I did not give it the pin test. Thanks for making me see the light. What makes my big head so hard?...

Re: Cactus identification help request
Teo and Saxicola, I appreciate your suggestions and comments. The woman (former coworker) who potted up and gave me the plants under consideration is unavailable at the moment. I am trying to contact her to ask her if the plant in question had milky sap when she transplanted part of it into the pot ...

Re: Cactus identification help request
Thanks to all who helped on this post. 2 is Chamecereus silvestrii. This is clearly the correct I.D. #1 definitely Tephrocactus articulatus var. inermis This gets me into the right ball park. After looking at v. strobiliformis and diadematus, the latter is definitely a contender. 3 is a Stapeliad. ....

Re: Tan blotches on cactus
Thank you both for your response. I'm glad it doesn't sound like anything serious. I was prepared to remove the blotched section and start a second plant. Now I'm comfortable leaving it alone.

Tan blotches on cactus
I have consulted the Pests & Disease tab but cannot determine what is going on with the cactus pictured below. The tan to brown spot has been around for a while and it could just be a callus spot. I am concerned it might be a sign of an invasion by a pest. Does anyone have an idea whether or not...

Using sun-screen mesh on Harrisia jusbertii
I've moved H. jusbertii around in my yard but I can't find a spot where they have ideal conditions. They are currently along the north side of house which puts them in shade in winter and full sun in summer. The summer sun is stressing some of them which I suspect may turn yellow if I don't do somet...

Re: Aloe ID
Thank you, Rosemarie. I see some resemblances, particularly in the deltoideodonta and parvula. When I was looking for images of the calcairophila, there was a ssp. of it called aristata. That rang a bell. Aristata was mentioned as a possible species in the mix by one of the staff where I purchased i...

Aloe ID
Recently purchased this Aloe plant. The sales person advised me that this plant most likely has a history of multiple cross pollinations. I can be satisfied calling it an aloe hybrid. But, can someone give me an idea, from its characteristics, what species was/were probably involved? That is, if it ...

Keeping Agave geminiflora healthy
I read the following advice regarding Agaves: Debris should be removed regularly and kept to a minimum. Otherwise it decomposes and rots right on the surface of the leaf, causing lesions of dead tissue and infection that can lead ultimately to the death of the plant. Agave_g_IMG_4165_1.jpg I can usu...

Correction follow-up
A twist to the identification of the aloe pictured above. Friend Gary finally got around to tending to this aloe.
Aloe harlana and A. hemmingii must look very much alike!Got my plant out of soil. Roots don't look bad. Found tag in the soil: Mosaic aloe/Aloe harlana.

Tony wrote No, the dried up ends of the leaves (the yellow part?) will not turn green again, the leaf will continue to dry up as it naturally does until it can be eventually removed. Overall, it doesn't look all that bad to me, maybe just a little stressed from cold perhaps. Thank you for taking a ...

Thanks for the quick response time. Majority rules. The picture of A. hemmingii I found looks good for a match. http://www.tucson-gardener.com/graphics/succulent/Aloe%20hemmingii.html I'm probably pushing my luck but...would any of you know if friend should expect the leaves yellowed from overwateri...
