Re: Short flower stems

Thanks to all for your help. Things are busy for me right now so I am taking pictures of the different plant parts for later study. This is a little bit harder than I thought it would be. I do appreciate your time and help. Thank you.

ID request for unknown Mammilliaria

I would appreciate any help in determining which specie this Mammilliaria might be. It is about 4.5 inches (11 cm.) in diameter, and a bit over 2 inches high (5 cm.) in height.

Thank you,

Re: Short flower stems

Thank you. I Suppose it must work for this plant, but doesn't seem like the best strategy for attracting pollinators. It makes lots of seed pods so I guess a fully opened flower is not necessary.

Short flower stems

Have two questions about this plant. What causes the short bloom stalks? Flowers cannot open for the plants own spine's. Am I correct in thinking this is a Mammillaria? https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7450/13924899436_071216236e_o.jpg Defective_flowers by billykain , on Flickr https://farm4.staticfli...

Re: Opuntia ID needed

Thank you all very much. Now to clean it up and re-pot. This one came with its own scale. Not sure if that is better or worse than the straw flowers.

Opuntia ID needed

I have not been able to ID this plant. The tag said "Cactus", and the lable says "Opuntia". The tallest piece is a little bit under 6 inches. There seems to be no spines or glochids. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7336/9450286041_412dc771be_b.jpg NOID_Opuntia_1 by billykain , on F...

Re: Grafting Shlumbergera on Opuntia humifusa outside?

Not O. Humifusa, (I think it is O. Macrorhiza), but the results should be about the same, I believe. I have tried to use the "stab" graft. It kind of works, but I should have put the segments in so they pointed downward. The tape is on there because the grafted piece got heavy enough to pu...

Re: Tragic fire in Arizona

Peterthecactusguy, Aren't you located about 40 miles south and east of the fire? According to Weather Underground (perhaps not the most reliable source), your location is having 100+F. days and very low humidity (saw 10% one day). Under those conditions, almost anything will burn. Can we assume that...

Re: Rooting Opuntia

LOL! My experience with Opuntia is that you can toss it anywhere on the ground, at just about any time, and it will root. I am about to find out if I have the same experience here. I have a couple that are callusing over (I hope). The plan is to use them as an under-stock, as this plant has no spin...

Rooting Opuntia

How long should I wait before removing and trying to root a piece of Opuntia? Right now they are just starting to lose the "soft" spines and seem tender. Although I suspect they should be older, I want to try one, but hate to lose it if it won't work.

TIA,
John

Re: Surviving December 21st

In parts of the south, black-eyed peas and cornbread is eaten on New Year's Day. Supposed to bring good luck in the coming year. I don't believe too many people follow that custom anymore, though. It is probably a hillbilly thing. If you are really well off, you have "Hopping John". It is ...

Re: Need help with my computer modem.

I watched the video and understand that an internet router is required. I do not use Roadrunner and have only considered getting MagicJack for an Aunt, so take this with a grain of salt. My router (Netgear N-150) has an option that allows the wireless part to be disabled. I am not recommending NetGe...

Re: NOID Stapelia

Thanks to both of you. Just about everything I read on stapelias, suggests they are highly variable. Jerry's plant (like a number of pictures I have seen) does not appear to have the long petal tips that mine does. That was why I did not consider S. grandifloria. However, the petals are usually re-c...

NOID Stapelia

Hello, I believe the flower in the upper right to be that of Stapelia gigantea. Could someone tell me what the lower one might be? The plant is very smooth looking and green, while S. gigantea is greyish-green. Is it just a hybrid that can never be identified? http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8013/7584...
