Right, one has to hand-pollinate them. But usually they set seeds/fruit with only one plant. So this species seems to be self-fertile. At least the one in my yard.

Re: Pachycereus pringlei?
I think this year you are just looking earlier at the new growth than before. New growth shows usually brownish spines and fuzz in the very beginning. And regarding your three plants... only this one started this season's growth already.

I am only ready to trust your ID as soon as I see a stout central spine of the mature plant.

A little more light would help growing it more compact and with longer spines.

Re: ID help please! (Escobaria?)
This is definitely a Coryphantha. But sorry, I don't dare ID the species.
Neobesseya/Escobaria missouriensis has thinner spines, usually a center spine and flowers mainly in spring.

Do you want unrooted cuttings or would you rather like old rooted stems of plants to grow your own offsets? Payment for shipping would be enough.

Re: Should we keep up the monthly photo Contests?
Joining in the contest was fun. We saw so great photos and wonderful plants. But honestly, there are so many C&S forums and photo galleries nowadays that one (even retired as I am) can't watch/check all of them. The cactiguide forum is so active and the cactiguide.com and succulent.com are almos...

Re: Peniocereus flowered, but is it johnstonii or marianus??
Hi Greg, now you got me! I am totally puzzled. First of all: a Peniocereus (in your area) shouldn't flower at this time of the year. Second: another miracle is that your plant developed this flower obviously in a shady location according to having a very green flower tube with only very thin spines....

Gene,
I think your contest entry with the twisted spines is Opuntia sulfurea.
