fungicide for seedlings
Anyone have a good suggestion for a mild fungicide that can be misted on newly germinating seedlings to help combat any damping off? I been doing this for a while but have not really gone down this road.

Re: how long in the dark
I do get a little speedier growth on them. I use generic plant/aquarium bulbs in a 4 foot ballast with the light about 6 inches from the pots. Plants don't etiolate at all and spine development is good. When I put them outside they go under 50% shadecloth. The last couple of batches I did last year ...

Re: how long in the dark
I have had good results with 24 lighting. I know it sounds crazy but I have grown many batches of seed over the years and they start life under 24 hr lighting for 6 months or so before I move them outdoors into normal lighting. They seem to adjust easily.

Re: slow grow frustration
They are slow for me as well, however, when I see them putting on new spines I put the water to them pretty liberally. I do acidify my water to get a ph of about 6. They are picky plants for sure. By contrast, I have taken warnockii from seed to flower in less than 3 years so go figure. I have also ...

Re: El Paso - Roswell cactus places
On the west side of Roswell I have found reichenbachii in grassy flats along with escobaria vivipara, and echinocactus texensis. I have found most vacant lots in Roswell to be good texensis habitat, the same goes for lots in Artesia as well. The road to Sitting Bull Falls off of 285 is also good for...

Re: Joshua Tree Park: Pinkham Canyon
The alversonii look great. I have had difficulty with those over the years. They come up from seed easy enough but then start rotting away. I'm thinking maybe a late winter/early spring growth spurt, put the water to them and then let 'em dry out. I have seen them around Blythe, CA and they are grow...

Re: Devil's River State Natural Area, Texas
Is this location pretty far north of the Comstock/Del Rio area? That may explain why you didn't see ancistros there. I believe they stay pretty close to the river. I have good information that puts them as very common around Amistad and Comstock/Del Rio.

Re: Devil's River State Natural Area, Texas
What a great place!! How far north of Amistad is the area? Did you not see ancistrocactus brevihamatus? It should be there.
May have to plan a trip there.

Re: Organ Mountains
If there has been sufficient winter moisture, the Jarillas are a great place to see flowers. I have been there virtually every year for the past 15 years. 2010 was a banner year for flowers, there is easy access although some roads, at least in 2010, were getting pretty rough. A 4x4 will get you to ...

:-) I want to grow out more marianus, too, as I am nervous, only having two. I still don't know exactly how to treat them over the winter. peterb Peter, you should have no problems with them outdoors in your area. I have seedlings and a larger plant that I kept outside during all the rain/cold and ...
