Re: Sudden death after using calcined DE as a soil medium?
I keep them inside under T8s over the winter, so normally I do water them year round. They did appear to be rotten when I cut them open, yellow-orange tones in the root portion that later turned to black, accompanied by an "off" smell. If it turns out that it was just the early watering th...

Sudden death after using calcined DE as a soil medium?
I've used horticultural diatomaceous earth as a soil component and liked it, but the shipping was killer and the company I got it from no longer carries it anyway. I wanted to find something similar that would be cheap and local, and I had read that similar materials were sometimes sold as oil absor...

Propagation by taproot cuttings?
I degrafted a bunch of L. williamsii grafts that had been on Pereskiopsis, and a number of them have made many taproots. I was wondering about the possibility of taking taproot cuttings and inducing them to form new heads. Obviously there would be no areoles on them, but callus tissue can be induced...

I have some loph seedlings that I also started around June that had a similar problem and responded pretty well to a return to high humidity, maybe it's different for ariocarpus though. I had been thinking it was sunburn but they are now much greener and faster growing under essentially the same lig...

I don't think that's really a concern with this level of power usage, think of all the houses with electric heat, water heaters, clothes dryers, stoves etc. I think I have some of the same kind of shop lights in my window box setup (the white ones), power usage at the wall is right around 60w for 2x...
