Re: Sudden death after using calcined DE as a soil medium?

OK, I guess I will give this material another shot then.

Re: Sudden death after using calcined DE as a soil medium?

I keep them inside under T8s over the winter, so normally I do water them year round. They did appear to be rotten when I cut them open, yellow-orange tones in the root portion that later turned to black, accompanied by an "off" smell. If it turns out that it was just the early watering th...

Sudden death after using calcined DE as a soil medium?

I've used horticultural diatomaceous earth as a soil component and liked it, but the shipping was killer and the company I got it from no longer carries it anyway. I wanted to find something similar that would be cheap and local, and I had read that similar materials were sometimes sold as oil absor...

Re: Propagation by taproot cuttings?

Cool, I was hoping it was doable without hormones. I have some 6-BAP that I got a while ago but I'm a little wary of using it.

Propagation by taproot cuttings?

I degrafted a bunch of L. williamsii grafts that had been on Pereskiopsis, and a number of them have made many taproots. I was wondering about the possibility of taking taproot cuttings and inducing them to form new heads. Obviously there would be no areoles on them, but callus tissue can be induced...

Poor comparison I guess, I do think they actually are growing faster in addition to the initial plumping though. Would like to try growing some A. fissuratus soon, cool looking plants.

I have some loph seedlings that I also started around June that had a similar problem and responded pretty well to a return to high humidity, maybe it's different for ariocarpus though. I had been thinking it was sunburn but they are now much greener and faster growing under essentially the same lig...

Interesting, I haven't grown this species but it looks like something that would work well with seedlings, I'd be interested to see how it goes.

Some people seem to use stretchy plastic food wrap with good results, I would try that if instant bonding glue doesn't seem to be available in your area. I have not had a chance to try the plastic wrap technique yet but I would like to.

I wonder if I have a T. aoracanthus too, growth seems fairly slow and the spines are somewhat dark. I tried grafting a pup to pereskiosis at one point but no luck there.

I don't think that's really a concern with this level of power usage, think of all the houses with electric heat, water heaters, clothes dryers, stoves etc. I think I have some of the same kind of shop lights in my window box setup (the white ones), power usage at the wall is right around 60w for 2x...

Well I got mine germinating, 2 out of 10 sprouted and look pretty healthy but another 2 that popped are a lot more iffy looking. Not sure if I will have the heart to try grafting them when the time comes. Maybe I would have had better results if I sprouted them sooner, who knows.

I like the simple nature designs the best. Of those pics, Alaska, Montana and Connecticut look pretty good to me. Here in Canada we have some pretty terrible commemorative designs too, from scribbled drawings by children to cheap looking "colourized" designs that look like they came off a ...
