Re: UV Lamps for the winter
Most of them need a cool dry season in which their growth slows way way down anyway. It's just how they grow. Trying to subvert this won't work for long.

Re: Rocks as pots/planters
It has holes drilled completely through the bottom and even a couple through the sides. I just recently decided to try again with a S. rauschii pup in it. It's been doing great, but we'll see.

Re: Why do novices always use clay pots?
I don't know if I'm a novice or not, but I use clay for two reasons. One, I like the look. Two, my plants live outside in the spring/summer/fall, and they get rained on. Sometimes at inopportune times. When that happens I need them to dry out ASAP.

Re: New subforum
We still have posts from March on the first page of the main forum, so I'd be in favor of leaving everything here.

Re: Rocks as pots/planters
There's actual gritty mix in there, can't tell from the photo. I don't think my pot killed it, I think it was winter moisture, but I can't know for sure. I haven't tried anything else in it since.

Re: Rocks as pots/planters
I used to have an aquarium and had some old live rock lying around, so I hollowed one out and stuck a Mammillaria saboae in it. I ended up killing the plant, but while it lived it looked epic.

I'd love to have that. Not for eighty bucks, but I'd still love to have it.

Re: colors dont show in pics
Those weird fluorescent colors are just out of gamut for any imaging device. Plus, the effect is partly entoptic, because the colors are so vibrant that they oversaturate the cones in the eye and stuff.
Re: SAVED!!!!
I had an Echinopsis clump that was very rot prone. It started out losing pups in the middle of summer when it's very hard to water echinopsis too much. Then it kept doing it in the winter when it hadn't been watered in months, and started getting little rotten spots all over it. So I cut one up and ...

Re: Hamatocactus hamatacanthus
Most excellent. Then I can confirm that at least some of these labelled as hamatacanthus are really setispinus.
Re: A tableau
That's incredible.

Re: Hamatocactus hamatacanthus
Cool, thanks for that. One question, though. My spotter sent me a crappy phone pic. I'm not sure if there is actually red on the petals or not, it might just be that the stamens are red. Does that matter, or is any red=setispinus?

Re: Hamatocactus hamatacanthus
Well it bloomed again and I was out of town again. But I had a spotter this time, and it does have a red center. So does that mean I have setspinus? I thought hamatacanthus had solid yellow flowers, but maybe it's not that simple. It's not that important now, I guess, since I just wanted the red cen...

Re: Hamatocactus hamatacanthus
Well, crap. Mine bloomed while I was out of town and I didn't get to see. I tried to necropsy a spent flower, but it was kind of gooey. It looked like it had red centers, but hard to tell. The next buds won't be ready for a while. It has one flower that looks pretty bad, but still could possibly ope...

Re: Hamatocactus hamatacanthus
Interesting. Someone on another board posted a pic of one that actually looked like setispinus. Could be a mixed bag. I'll just have to wait and see.
