will they be okay without a lot of heat?

My wife's becoming more and more concerned about the electricity bill now that I've been keeping the warming light on for the cacti. She'd like it off for the better part of the day. Will they be okay with heat for only a couple hours a day and the rest of the time be in the high sixties?

brilliant translucent green

ever have a cactus seedling that looked like a previously sucked on lime lifesaver candy?

The coloration isn't there now but when it poked through the soil, it was this brilliant emerald green. It was very cool looking! :)

I think I've got a problem

Nothing's wrong. I just want to avoid a problem. The container I have my seedlings in right now is one of those pots designed to sit on a windowsill and hold flowers or plants in it. It's about 5 to 6 inches deep without any holes for drainage. Yeah, rootrot. Anyway, I'm thinking about transplanting...

is this unusual?

I noticed today that I have new, new growth in my wee cacti garden. Is it unusual for seeds to remain dormant for a spell while others thrive for a couple weeks?

why do you guys use scientific names?

how come you use the scientific names instead of the common nomenclature? It would make it easier to understand and pronounce for typical joes like me.

Just sayin' :?

a full-on deluge of water will dislodge my seedlings (sprouts). I use a spray bottle to must the sand, soil and sprouts every morning to simulate the morning dew.

covered? No, not anymore. They were when I planted the seeds but when they sprouted, I took the plastic off.

and I don't even know what species the cacti are in the little garden I started.
